i7-920: Low Temps with 19x Multiplier?

Thread Starter
I have overclocked my 920 to 3.8GHz using x19, x20, and x21 multipliers, and all three basically deliver equivalent performance.

I prefer the 19x multi because then I can run my memory at exactly 1600MHz.

Now, the strange thing: Temps reported by speedfan are significantly lower using the 19x multiplier.

So either temps are really lower, or using a 19x multi causes speedfan report inaccurate temps.

Thoughts?

I bet that you are using significantly lower vcore for the 19x multi than the 20 and 21, that is why your getting lower temps. I7's prefer uneven multipliers and require less vcore when on a odd multi. The reason 21 is hotter is its stressing your processor further.

Nope, these are at same vcore.

Initially I thought that the CPU must be performing poorer if the temps are lower, but benchmarks with sandra and 3dmark didn't show any loss of performance.

Edit: Wait, you have a point. although I didn't change vcore in the bios, the actual vcore might be lower when using the 19x multi. Speedfan reports 1.26v under load. Will check using 20x multi later...
