THQ's talked up promising FPS Homefront, claiming the shooter can compete "with the very best" in the genre.

Speaking alongside news that the game's gone gold at NYC dev Kaos Studios, THQ core games boss Danny Bilson said Homefront's set to be one of the publisher's most successful releases.

"Homefront is set to become one of THQ's most successful original IP launches. The team at Kaos have spent three years building an FPS that competes with the very best, offering a thrilling and original single player experience and hundreds of hours of multiplayer," he said.

On the FPS's "hundreds" of dedicated servers across the globe, THQ's director of infrastructure, Drew Como said he knows how important the feature is to players.

"We're providing dedicated servers for both console and PC versions of the game," said Drew Como, Director of Infrastructure, THQ. "Dedicated servers allow us to support 32-players on large maps with infantry, vehicles and drones, and level the playing field compared to titles that rely on user-hosted games.

Here are a few bullet points outlining how players will be empowered, or not, in some cases (thanks Segment Next):

  • There will be no option to change spawn times or the weapons available to the players.
  • No hardcore mode is included. This is done mainly to preserve the competitive aspect of the game.
  • Servers will be able to run in 'mixed mode', which will alter the game-types of the server automatically.
  • There will be a "Message of the Day" support, and the option to make servers private is also a possibility.
  • Admins will be able to toggle auto-balancing on and off, force a player to spectate, and switch members to a team.
  • The dedicated servers do not required Steam Client to be logged in.
  • The server variables included are:
    • Server Name
      MOTD
Game Mode (easy to have mixed mode)
      GC Score Limit
      TDM Score Limit
      Time Limit
      Internet (off for LAN)
      Vac Secured
      No of Slots
      Game Port
      Query Port
      AdminPassword
      GamePassword
      Friendly Fire
      No Vehicles
      Record Demo
  • Developers are considering a patch that will allow a Ready-up Timer, Halftime team-switching/side switching and round numbers selection.

Thanks for posting. Really looking forward to this game. The SP campaign shows promise IMO (I like the premise, let's hope they get the storyline and general gameplay right), and now the multiplayer looks like it might be a hit. I rarely pre-order games, and infrequently buy them at launch, but if Homefront ends up being as good as it looks I will probably pick it up shortly after release.

aren't Kaos studios the original developers of Desert Combat? the greatest mod of all time? (for bf1942). If so I'm picking this one up

Yes they are.

I'll be keeping an eye on this game, it definitely has the potential to be a great competitive FPS.

Thanks for that.

Least there will be mod tools no? I don't see why they would restrict this sort of stuff though. The host should have power over how the game is played, not the dev, they should only be suggestive in as to what to do.

I can live with that, can be easily added with mod tools (they did announce mod tools didn't they?).

All in all I can see this being a good game, the problem is that it may not be as popular as most of us hope

I really could use a demo just to be sure its not Crysis 2 waiting to happen... other than that, the pimping looks strong with this one.

I don't know about mod tools specifically but the game is built with the Unreal 3 engine so I imagine unofficial mods are an almost certainty.

It's not a Crysis 2 waiting to happen. Homefront just is what it is, and it'll be on my hardrive ASAP.

Good info thanks,

Already pre-ordered this, because it revolves around squad based play...something I really favor in my FPS games. The premise and backstory involved are reminiscent to the Fallout series. Maybe that's why it draws me as it does.

oh yea, and a free hat

I would be a lot more excited if Kaos had made the PC version and someone else had ported the console version. As it is I will wait for purchaser reviews.
