Considering upgrading my storage drives.

Hi,

I currently have 2x WD Cavier Black 640GB HDDs which i am considering upgrading to 2x 1TB drives.

I had a look at the current WD Black 1TB drives which look like a nice upgrade, but just wonderin if there is anything better on the market as it's been a long time since i've looked at spindle storage.

I like wd warranty. i had 2 raptors die on me like 3 weeks befor the warranty was up and they got me new ones back. I like wd 1tb drives. I got a seagate 2 tb drive (it was cheap) and 1tb seagate as well. but i do like wd drives. seagate not the best but warranty.

The Samsung F3 1TB seems to be regarded as the best 1TB drive (maybe the fastest 3.5" drive of all). The Velociraptor may be a good idea depending on your budget, or if you have a certain usage pattern the Seagate Momentus XT could add a decent amount of speed.
Also, don't discount SSDs. For the same price you can get a 60GB SSD which would be a bit faster for the OS and quite a few apps.

Yea the samsung does look like a nice drive, but i'm talking about my storage drives not my Corsair Force 160 OS drive (that's in my sig) .

I might give the samsungs a go.

...for storage the Samsung F4G 2TB could also be a good idea. I have two of those in a server and they're plenty fast for streaming/sequential tasks. They are very cool (high max @43°C in a not so well ventilated case, 32°C average) and thus far didn't cause any problem.

EDIT: the only time I hear these drives are when they spin up, which is once a day in the morning. They have this creepy metal sound on boot, but otherwise they're silent and vibrate slightly on seeks. If I would take the time to install some rubber mounts they would be dead silent.

I wonder how loud the samsungs are? But they can't be louder than my 3 fans on my rad so it shouldn't matter too much (Not that my fans are that loud though).

Either the Samsung's or the Wd blacks but if you plan to raid don't go wd. Most people will recommend the f3 1tb but either drive will give you great performance.
