But as far as I understand it going from the either the mobo via toslink or GPU via HDMI to a decent receiver will still be digital and use the receiver's higher quality DAC and have similar or better sound quality compared to a similarly priced sound card/DAC correct? That's what I think I'd like to do because the current route I have for sound upgrades would be spending about $200 on either a sound card, a DAC like the maverick, or a receiver. Receiver will allow for the better audio quality for my X360 as well rather than just the comp like the other choices, so it should be the best choice. I would be using bookshelf speakers for the fronts and a small sub for just 2.1, and I rarely use headphones so that wouldn't really be a consideration, just general sound quality for music, movies (blu ray) and games in that order.

Biggest thing I'd like to be sure of is that I will get a significant audio upgrade in all uses from a decent receiver even though I can't bitstream to it, and that it will be comparable or better quality than if I spent the same money on a dedicated sound card.

In your case, I'd get a receiver. No question about it. And yes, you'll be able to send a pure digital signal to it and let the receiver's DAC do all the work.

Excellent, thanks for the answers. Sorry to derail the thread, I will post a thread in the appropriate section when it comes time to decide which receiver to get.

Seems like it's been canceled. i was reading on another forum someone emailed asus, and an asus representitive said it takes 3-4 weeks for an announced product to get on the market and we heard about this thing in march.

I'd like to know if this thing supports dolby headphone.

Well I'm not sure that's always true for Asus products.
Maybe generally speaking...
There's no doubt it'll support DH, it's their next flagship by all accts.
And their Essence ST/X supported DH.

Are there headphones small enough to support 600 ohm drivers? Also, when I saw the thread I gasped in excitement. Now I'm just posting.

^ We dunno if it's even dead or alive.
There's been no news about it for many many months.
An oddly long time...

Doesn't seem to be a tube amp inside wherever it's supposed to amp the signal.
