Overclocking my 5850 is nothing short of a headache

*I'm going to include as much detail as possible, this will be a fairly large post*

Every time I OC my 5850, I give up because I just get angry that it won't become stable. So this time I gave it my all, sitting there staring at the screen looking for artifacts, etc. And it still won't agree, but it's weird.

I PM'd Behemoth for assistance and he pointed me in a general direction to begin. He told me to OC my Core first, run Furmark at a 1680x1050 Fullscreen for 5 minutes each increase of the core, and look for artifacts. I eventually got to 910 core, and within 3 minutes I saw artifacts. So I lowered it to 905, there were no artifacts for the 5 minutes.

So I thought I found my core limit. Behemoth told me for memory testing run Heaven 2.0, 1680x1050, 2xaa, normal tessellation. So I'm sitting there running benchmarks for at least 2 hours increasing the memory as I go.

I wrote down every min/max FPS along the way of the FPS increase. I'm actually going to include it because I just CANNOT figure out why my card is doing this.

Quote:
1075mhz RAM - Min: 10.8 Max: 76.5
1100mhz RAM - Min: 10.7 Max: 78.3
1120mhz RAM - Min: 10.5 Max: 78.3
1135mhz RAM - Min: 11.0 Max: 77.6
1145mhz RAM - Min: 10.9 Max: 77.1
1155mhz RAM - Min: 11.0 Max: 78.1
1165mhz RAM - Min: 8.8 Max: 76.1
1175mhz RAM - Min: 10.7 Max: 77.6
1195mhz RAM - Min: 10.3 Max: 77.9
1205mhz RAM - Min: 10.9 Max: 78.0
I stopped at 1205 because something had come up. Not because after 1205 I saw artifacts
During those benchmark sessions in Heaven 2.0, I did not see ANY artifacts. I'm pretty sure there was no performance loss as you can see by the recorded FPS numbers. I also remembered the FPS I did previously in every area before ever memory change, and it never drastically decreased.

So alright, we'll put it this way. So I'm happy that I have no artifacts, happy that I might have a good card because 905/1205 is really nice numbers for no over-volting. I log on WoW for raid time, go into the raid, tab out.

I go to YouTube and load a video, and 3 seconds into the video I get a display driver crash. So I was a little angry and decided to wait till after raid to further diagnose it. So after raid time comes, I keep dropping it until I hit 1050 and it crashes on that number as well. So I brought memory back down to 1000 (stock) and it crashes.

I don't understand. How can you be stable with no artifacts in a VERY GPU heavy benchmark, but you crash on a YouTube video. I seriously do NOT understand it.

So now that I'm crashing on YouTube videos I have know idea where to start from or what to do. I'm just at a loss of what to do right now.

Its 2d performance vs. 3d performance...

I've had the same problem with my 5850 in the past. When its Overclocked, via MSI Afterburner, 2d video playback tends to crash while 3d runs great. But when I reset MSI Afterburner back to default profiles, EVERYTHING runs great...

This not only includes YouTube videos, but also DVD Playback and my TV software.

I believe it to be a problem with MSI Afterburner itself and the way it handles OC profiles, and not the Vid Card itself.... however, I did not see whether you stated you were using MSI AB to do your Overclocking...

Also, I should state that in the past I've shut down MSI AB, closed it and not had it running in thr background, and then attempted some Overclocking through my AMD and Asus software... and my 2d Video Playback did not crash...

Which again, supports that the crashes are related to MSI AB's OC profiles.

Oh my God dude, that fixed it. I reset all settings in MSI AB back to default, videos didn't crash. I exited MSI AB, set it to 905/1205 in CCC and it's not crashing.

Thank you SO much dude. So this whole time my OC might have been stable just MSI AB was conflicting with 2D?

Correct.

I've had mine clocked up to 950 core, 1200 Memory, with fan speed at 75%... running Furmark for hours and never had problems and Temps never passed 65c!

Then go and try to play a DVD... and BAM! Crash!

Get mad.. pull hair out, scream.. yell...

Then go reset MSI AB.. and problem solved! LOL

The crashes are caused by hardware acceleration by Adobe flash, i was overclocking a freind of mine's 5850 and had nothing but trouble with crashing in youtube. I disabled hardware acceleration and it worked.

I've been testing all day, mostly. Editing clocks as I play the Crysis 2 demo. Seems I'm having the most luck at 900/1030. I'll do more testing later.

this is the problem

just pause any vid, right click, settings and uncheck the box - problem solved.

any 5850 that oc's to 5870 clocks on stock voltage is a winner in my book!
