Morning everyone,

I'm trying to redesign how the airflow works in my HAF X case and see whether the solution is a viable one.

I've got a brand new 1090T ready to be installed into a new mobo, but before I do that, I'd like to get all the design process out of the way concerning airflow and proper technique for cooling.

I have run into some questions, and am looking for some input from you trusted folk.

The radiator will be cooled by 6 Scythe Slipstream SY1225SL12HP fans (45cfm at about 1200 rpm per fan )in a push pull setup, with dust filters on the flow coming into the radiator. I only calculated one side of the fans for CFM total.

The case comes with a rear 140mm fan, rated at 49 cfm.
The front fan is a 230mm rated at ~110cfm.
And the side fan, which I'll be using (hopefully to pull air in) is a 200mm rated at ~110cfm.

My choices seem to be:

Choice 1:

Intake- Have the Radiator fans pushing air through the radiator into the case, combined with the rear fan coming in, and finished up with the air coming in from the side fan.

Total CFM intake (calculating filters) = 266 cfm into the case.

The exiting airflow consists of the PSU which I've averaged to 30cfm and the front fan pushing 110cfm, sans filters which comes to ~ 140 exhaust cfm.

That leaves a positive pressure of 126, but my concern is when running an Overclocked 1090t and GTX 460 in the same loop, whether the heat generated from the radiator will have detrimental effects to the heat buildup within the case.

The alternative to me, is to do the opposite, I.E:

Choice 2:

Intake - front 110cfm fan, side 110cfm fan, and rear 49 cfm fan. All will be filtered so I'll take off 15% which brings me to intake of = 229 cfm entering the case.

All of that is then relying on the exhaust capabilities of the 6 fans pushing that warm air THROUGH the radiator at = 135 exhaust cfm.

This leaves a positive pressure of = 94 cfm in the case.

So, what am I asking?

I want to know which choice would be more viable, and perhaps which tweaks I can make to make the design better. Also, perhaps I'm not calculating the airflow correctly on the radiator fans. I'm not familiar with the correct way to calculate a push pull cfm, so I just went with the average cfm of each fan on a single side.

Any constructive input will be much appreciated and I will update the post with pictures as the process begins in the physical realm.

I run my HAF 932 with intakes on the front 220 and side 220 and exhaust with the rear 140 and push through my rad with 3 AP-15s. Seems to work good for me. I have -pressure in the case based on cfm ins and outs. I would think that moving more hot air out of the case is better than moving more ambient into the case. But they should all balance out at a point.

I wanted positive pressure to reduce the amount of dust getting through the cracks and into the case. With your cooling through the radiator using the air from inside the case, what are your idle/load temps for your i7?

I have mine set with all 3 case fans as intake and radiator fans as exhaust. The air entering the case doesn't heat up too much if your gpu(s) are watercooled. Mobo probably dumps less than 50W into the case. Try not to overdo it with your fan speed controller if you have one tho, at least the rheostat variety, since they're not very efficient and will dump a good bit of heat into the case. Any fans you'll run at max anyway (like intakes) shouldn't go on the fan speed controller.

Thanks Davs. I've got enough 4 pin fan connectors on the mobo to run a full 6 radiator fans and the chassis fans, and they're all controlled by onboard software. So no heat from that!

I'm also thinking that because heat likes to rise, I might as well not fight it, and just have the radiators exhaust the air like I described for choice 2.

Having my RAD out and inside taking air from the case i only experience 2-3c drop so do whats best for you as its not much.

My current running temps are 62C-68C depending if the heat is on my room temp is 71F. My proc never drops below 100% <3 folding so that is what you can expect with the same setup. Also I'm at 4.2 ghz i7 930 @ 1.36 volts.

Think you will do better for top radiator fans blowing out since hot air rises and i dont really like them as intake since you will be forcing hot air into the case to cool other components.

I got the front, side and back as intake and the radiator as the only exhaust. I got some temp probes around the case and one on the outside and the difference is only about 1-2C.
