I will say out of all the big budget AAA mmo's that have came out and been compared to WoW this is probably the best one.
I've only got about 20 hours into the game though. For an mmo 20 hours is no where near enough time to see all one has to offer.
I'm gonna go into a little more detail here now.
The game in my opinion is (outside of wow) the most polished and smooth mmo I've played. That to me is HUGE because the game has not even been out a week yet.
Another factor to consider when I talk about an mmo being polished or smooth is how the action bars work. It's hard to explain but some mmo's simply have a "clunky" feel to the action bars. In other words you press a skill button and it just feels either off or slow to respond. Sometimes it's not even clear that a skill has been pressed. In Rift this is definately not the case though. It's quick, smooth and very obvious when a skill is pressed. To a mmo noob that might seem like a picky point but trust me when you spend hours playing these games that becomes very important.
The class system is also very fun if not a tad on the confusing side. Specially for someone new to mmo's. Right now it's all new though so people are having fun expirementing with different combos. I have a feeling that in a few months you'll see more "cookie cutter" builds up, or class standards so to speak. This is not to say you can't be succesfull if you don't stick to those, just saying for someone new if you feel like you're in over your head you could hop to some forums for some quick help.
Graphicaly the game is pretty nice looking. There are moments when I think "damn that looks beautiful". Be wary though there are times when it looks less then impressive. No way to describe this it's just something you'll see for yourself really. So far I'd say my only knock on the games graphical department might be some of the animations are pathetic looking. At least for your basic male human.
Now to the meat and potatoes. The part everyone wants to know. Should I pick this over WoW or not. To that I give a very basic and common sense answer that I'll describe alittle from my point of view. It simply depends on what you want.
In my humble opinion if you are into running dungeons and raiding I cannot reccomend this game over WoW. Now FULL disclaimer here I've only seen 2 of the dungeons Rift has to offer ok. The reason I say this is I have yet to play any MMO that can compare to WoW when it comes to dungeon designs. To me the Rift dungeons while fun, were simply random walking paths with enemies in your way. Every single dungeon in WoW has a "point" to it so to speak though. Again Rift is still very young and admitedly I have not seen all it has to offer in that department. So for all I know it could end up being better. I think it's safe to say though that to do that they would have a VERY high bar to jump.
Now on to a reason I would say chose Rift over WoW. Stuff to do in the world. With Rift you have this Rift system that happens randomly all over the zones. I'm not going to go into huge detail about these because at this point it's probably a safe bet you understand stuff about them. What I will say is that in my opinion Blizzard has nothing to offer out about in the actual zones that can touch the fun these provide for Rift in their zones.
So with that said...
If you're looking for a more structured environment for end game I'd say WoW all the way. It's also imo the most polished MMO there is.
If however you don't care much for a structuered environment to end game and just want to have fun running around the world as a bad ass level capped toon, then Rift would probably be the game for you.
Wow that came out way longer then I wanted it too haha.
Let me just say that if I were you as a first time MMO player I'd hit up the 10 day free trial of WoW. Play that, and then think about purchasing Rift. Honestly though, I don't believe a person can go wrong playing either 2.
I'll end with my personal top 5 list of mmo's out.
3. Lord of the Rings Online (free to play)
4. Runes of Magic (free to play)
5. Anything else.
