HX750W Corsair build question

Thread Starter

Greetings,

I have a choice between two systems to build either an i-5 or an i-7 system.

It's use is going to be for programming openCL, running eclipse, virtual machines, rdesktop, office things, etc...

I have a corsair HX750W and wonder if it's enough for the following setups or if I need to go with 850W. if that is the case I am going to get system 2 instead.. I think System 1 is overkill for me as a beginning programmer of OpenCL.. but ???

System 1:

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366
Intel Core i7-960 Bloomfield 3.2GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core
CORSAIR DOMINATOR 24GB (6 x 4GB)
SLI 9800GT Akimbo's
2 - SSD Drives
2 - Platter Drives
1 - DVD Burner

System 2:

ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Intel P55
Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB)
SLI 9800GT Akimbo's
2 - SSD Drives
2 - Platter Drives
1 - DVD Burner

If I promise not to overclock would system 1 be feasible? stable? Also I am eyeing UPS systems for it, and come across the following.. is this overkill? I am wanting to learn OpenCL / CUDA development and having the worst time building the system (I had an old 939 board which, when I added more memory shorted out and stopped working even after replacing the PSU... hence I am now hesitant)

CyberPower OR1500PFCRT2U Smart App UPS 1500VA 900W Rack

More than enough, feel free to break your promise on not overclocking.

You could do tri-SLI without breaking a sweat, assuming those mobos support it.

haha, I would eventually like to get a hold of 1 or two GTX 295's due to their floating point precision. If that day comes I will probably look into upgrading the PSU with them.

Thats good to hear, this will mostly be a development environment. If I succeed then exploring tri-quad options would be interesting indeed.

Thank you all, I'm going to go ahead and order the first system then.

hmm looking at it again.. I'd rather save some cash on the chips and buy quicker SSD's.

I'm going to get the 2nd system instead and then see what I can do in the I/O dept. Maybe then I could overclock on an H70 cooler.

If you are mainly concerned with I/O keep in mind that the Vertex 3 is coming out in the coming months ( I heard the end of March somehwere but that is just a rumor). It is significantly faster than anything on the market today but requires 6 gb/s sata to reach its potential. My 2 cents.

2 x SATA 6Gb/s is on board both systems. Thanks for the heads up. Hope it works well in Linux
