Official "FPS all about Frames, HZ, Low Graphics Settings and Low Res" Thread - Page 2

Before ql was released from beta you had to go into your cfg file and modify things, but now its all pretty much there in the in game options. Ive had this discussion before and i keep saying if they dont allow you to modify and you modify its cheating, but if they do allow you to modify and you choose to modify then its not cheating. That goes for modifying cfg files as well. If they didn't make it an option then and only then would it not be fair imo. Really surprised this thread isnt more popular.

I always use picmip 10 and tank bright jr model when I used to play quake live.
Only 120Hz, prerendered frames = 0 is what matters, resolution doesn't matter.

Now I stopped playing QL though, cos this PoS engine doesn't support sufficient fov for triple wide resolution.

I think low resolution makes it harder to see the enemy, but you have lower chance to miss because there's less total pixels, so your cursor doesn't have to travel as much.

Unfortunately in newer games like Crysis 2 lower resolution makes the game look like PoS and makes it harder to differentiate the enemies from the background, because there's so much crap on your screen it just looks like a crapload of random pixels, hence nanovision is your friend.

That's why games stopped allowing people to use picmip 10, because if 1 guy starts using it to gain advantage, the next day everyone else feels forced to do the same to keep up.

What's the point to get the latest games with high res textures, if you are going to end up playing some PoS that looks like lego blocks.

i think with low graphics you get a quicker image because it doesnt have to be as heavily rendered. and with a crt's non existant response time, its a slight timing advantage.

I remember that when I used to play competitive CS a few years ago I hit a ceilling on my performance, then I met some guy that told me: hey drop the res from 1024 to 800. I did and my K/D ratio went up like crazy...

I think it depends how the game was intended to be played, for example; CS was made in the days when 800x600 was awesome, higher res doesn't really bring anything to it.

Now I'm playing StarCraft 2 and recently changed my settings to medium; I'm seeing a huge improvement in my play, especially since my computer is able to get through heavy fights without dropping below 60fps. That is by playing on a 16:9 screen, like it was designed.

This is rather common.

You are against picmip, yet bash Quake Live for not allowing a FoV high enough for triple monitors. Um, anyone else see something wrong with that?

Also note that picmip is not required, some people play fine without it. I don't use it, I use relatively low settings but textures still exist. In fact one of the best UT players in North America used medium settings.
