Psu woes....

Thread Starter
ok so my toughpower 750 just had some issues and blew 3 hdds and hurt my 5870 pretty bad.
idle voltages where fine but near the end i was seeing gpu vcore jump TREMENDOUSLY and getting random reboots on an otherwise very stable oc.
I'm sure the culprit can only be the psu. the hdds are fried the sata ports are fine and the cables still do suply voltage.

so im not waiting ages for an rma on the psu.
thinking of going with a bit of overkill for upgradability and durability.
im thinking either tx950 hx1000 or maybe even a coolermaster silent pro gold 1200.
i might even go as far as the ax1200 but it seems to be WAY overkill and at 310$ its 50% more expensive then the tx950 wich should do the job amply?

currently only using a q9550@ 4.1ghz with a 5870 3hdds 4 sticks of ddr2 7 120mm fans 2x 80mm fans etc last i checked a psu calc it was recommending over 800watts. i want to upgrade to an i7 with 16gb ram push it over 5ghz and get a gtx 580 or maybe 2 in the near future. (not too near i gotta save money for a supercharger kit for my new 5.0 muaha)

PSU calculators are always off, your current system would be fine with a 500w PSU or less(likely perfectly fine with a 400w unit). If you're sure on OC SLI 580s go 850w.

As stated above, your current system doesn't need anywhere near 750W.
A quality 750W can easily power OC'd SLI 580s with an OC'd I7.

Thermaltake tends to be a no-no, although I'm sure they have a few quality units as well. I think toughpower can be good though I can't say off the top of my head.

My favorites are the TruePower New Antec 750W (used to be 89.99 now it's 99.99 *sad*)
and the XFX Black Edition 750W as the most cost effective quality units you can look at.

Barring another twist of bad luck they will power you well and cleanly through just about anything you will throw at them (unless you want to go tri-580 or something crazy).
