Just in case you're not joking, lapping is when you sand down the surface of your CPU (the part that you put thermal paste on).

I understood it as both sanding down both the CPU and Heatsink to a "mirror finish" (IIRC 2000+ grit sandpaper). Not sure if you really need to do it on the heatsink these days though since there are some that are quite reflective and appear flat (or flat enough) already although if you do take one of those lasers to measure straightness to it I'm sure it won't be perfectly straight.

Anyways, because of greater contact surface the heat transfer is better and therefore you also will need less TIM to fill in the "gaps" between your HSF and CPU.

PS: I wouldn't lap an expensive chip just because I'm scared of messing up but if you do it with an expensive chip then all the power to you.

Exactly this.

OP, I'm not sure that dropping a few degrees C is worth the trouble that you will have if you need/want to RMA, or perhaps sell (buyers may not want to buy a lapped CPU).

Personally I don't care about re-sell value, this thing is going to be a project in the making for a long time, and I want to squeeze every last bit out that I can.

+1

i would grab some nasty water cooling and then try some OC ownage..

When I lapped my cpu and cooler I saw a 10ºC drop, so it was totally worth it

AMD: Did you void your warranty in any way?
Me: I don't know what you're talking about. Of course I used the stock cooler and stock TIM. I never overclocked or overvolted that chip at all.... ever... I swear. I also don't know how that DFI mobo caught fire either...

I also just cleaned the paste off the CPU before sending it back, you know I don't think the RMA dept would want a CPU with dried/caked on TIM returned so I made it clean for them. Sure you can't test it for having aftermarket TIM on it but I promise I didn't use aftermarket TIM...
