Updated with latests pictures wanna know what you think

So I've always been into photography but never had got around to trying my hand. So yesturday I picked up a Nikon d3000 from work and have been having a ball. But as one could imagine my images are pretty much ehhh. Ive been reading and re reading the essentials thread and screwing with different setting. Where else should I look at for tips/tricks and also what type of extra hardware should I pick up to have more fun and better shots.

Well, first, if you haven't already, you should check out the beginner guides we have here and here.

Next, practice! This is something I cannot stress enough. It's one thing to read about all the different settings and techniques; it's another thing to gain experience with them and be able to integrate them into your photographic intuition.

If you want, you should post your pictures onto this thread/forum and we can give you feedback on it. If you leave the EXIF data intact, we can definitely help you refine your technique

As for equipment, truthfully I'd work on your technique first before upgrading. Having better equipment makes taking great shots easier, but you need the knowledge/experience beforehand. If you feel like you do need new equipment though, you'll first need to post what sort of shots you do, what you want your new equipment to do/will be used for, and your budget.

And browsing through your pics, correct me if I'm wrong but are these shot on automatic settings? I think some of these pics would benefit greatly from well-done manual settings. This and this for example would have benefitted from narrow depth of field using f/3.5. Being a variable aperture lens, your max aperture changes from f/3.5 at the wide end to f/5.6 at the narrow end (hence, "f/3.5-5.6"). Because of this, to get f/3.5 on those shots, you'd need to shoot at the wide end, say, 18mm-22mm.

Some other shots would also benefit from photographic framing and composition. This is a good example of what I mean. IMO, the fire looks grand, something to be in awe of. Chopping the top + left side of the fire off detracts from this. Zooming out to the wide end, squatting down a bit, and framing the shot to get the entire fire in frame while looking up at the fire would have helped a lot with that image.

Understanding how to focus would help a bit too. This photo is OOF. My guess is the camera was using auto-select AF points, and it missed what you were trying to grab. If you haven't done so already, manually assigning AF points is an invaluable tool. There are two ways to go about this: Choose an AF point that best fits the image you're trying to get, or choose the center AF point, use that point to AF, then recompose your image. I personally use the latter, but either two of these works wonders compared to letting the camera choose.

In short, the camera may be capable of taking great shots, but it's still a "dumb" piece of equipment, IMO. It lacks our ability to make good judgement and often chooses something inappropriate for the picture at hand. Even professional cameras worth thousands of dollars still aren't good at deciding these things. The reason for learning how to do all these manual settings is that you're capable of making much better judgement about settings and your pictures than your camera is. The more you do for yourself, the less you leave for your camera, the better your pictures can turn out.

Yeah I've been using alot of auto setting but I usaully take the same picture messing with manual settings but I'm still figuring out different points when it comes to that but I'm super glad you gave such details because I'm going right now to try them. Ill do some new shots and post them. I just like seeing those amazing dynamic shots that just grab you. I know you can do that with my current setup but I've been warned that the base setup becomes extremely limited fast as you start to learn. I was looking at a 50mm f/1.8 lens because a buddy told me I'm going to need it as I learn.

I do have a possible dumb question my lens says 3.5-5.6 so that would be the aperture correct? but the range I actually get in manual mode is 5.6-32 and it doesnt seems to let me go larger then 5.6. Am I just simple or am I missing something

Do not get the 50mm f/1.8. It's a good lens, but it lacks an in-body AF motor and cannot AF with your D3000. A much better alternative is the 35mm f/1.8. Same large aperture goodness, wider focal point (good for cropped sensors like ours), and most importantly has autofocus.

And f/3.5-5.6 are your max apertures, not the aperture range. As it says, your max aperture will vary based on your focal point. At your wide end (18~25mm), you'll be capable of f/3.5 as your largest aperture. As you zoom in, however, your largest aperture will be smaller until you reach ~45-55mm, where your largest aperture is f/5.6.

If you want to use f/3.5, you have to zoom out and use the wider focal points.

So I'm going to keep this up for the reason I just want to post how I'm progressing and get everyones feed back. If anyone else does the same I'd throw my two cents in as well. I did upgrade my lens to a 35mm f1.8 which has made a huge difference and figured my next lens to be a 70-200 f2.8 that I will be using for live events.
