If you gained anything from RAID 1, its not speed. Reason being is your controller has to send the same I/O data to two drives now. As where the RAID 0 splits the I/O data to two drives. So say the physical drive can only handle 50 mb/sec, in RAID 0 you potentially have 100mb/sec data transfers because you split the data equally across two drives. In RAID 1, you are not splitting the data, you're double writing the same data to two drives, so you're 50 mb/sec drive is now your bottle neck. You gain no speed.

Actually, the OP stated RAID 1 and then someone else mention setting up RAID for speed and mentioned RAID 1 also. RAID 1 is not for speed, its for redundancy of data. RAID 0 is what you use for increased I/O speed of drives. I sure would hate to bring up RAID 0+1.

Yes, there are some saying that the read speeds can be better in RAID 1, but it appears that you need to run Linux or have controllers configured a certain way to get this to work. For most people, they are running Win7 with an onboard RAID chipset, which will not have these capabilities.
