EK CPU water Block HELP. (UPDATE) - Page 4

Sounds like hydrogen embrittlement, and a touch of intergranular corrosion, its not that big of a deal, probably set in due to some left over acid or to much biocide used... just clean it up and see if anyone locally will do a plating job for you... maybe in the automotive aftermarket... that said their process may of not of used the proper mixes or faulty electroplating to get a good even coating, but that is going to be hard to prove and even harder to get em to honor... I may just ask em if they would plate it again... push come to shove.

Come to think of it, may be worth your time to check if a local jeweler will do a rhodium plating on it... if its a big deal... been thinking about checking in on that myself for awhile now...

I have the EK Supreme HF Full Nickel ...do you think I will have similar problems with distilled water + G48(car antifreeze)?

Edit:what would be the optimal coolant considering the OP´s problem?

EK Copper is fine, and still performs better than other blocks on the market. As for the nickel, there's definitely an issue, and for those posting above: PTNuke will NOT void your warranty, nor was there any need for you to run anti-corrosion additives. (@EK's response). The plating flaking is a QC issue, the previous 'issues' with PTNuke were from a separate QC issue with the acrylic being used in tube reservoirs. It was determined from a long thread over at XS that the problem was with the acrylic as the PTNuke is harmless to the components.

I'm all for people making their own decisions on EK, but at least please be informed about it. (Hard to be I know, their support has been terrible lately and the flow of information coming out has been awful/misleading/contradictory).

YOu should try using silver barbs and or silver kill coils in your loops, ive been using this for a year and have not ran into any issues at all with my EK products.

I am a little confused now.

One factor why I bought the EK Supreme HF Full Nickel over Full Copper was because Nickel is said to corrode much slower.

I do not understand the issue here.
Is it EK´s fault for having applied a bad nickel plating?
Or the OP´s fault for using harmful substances/materials in his loop?

More and more people are reporting this and it has made me curious.
Can someone explain what is exactly going on ?

Nickel is less reactive than copper, so in a mixed-metal loop (ie copper and aluminum) the nickel is not going to corrode/corrode as quickly as copper. In a single metal loop it's not relevant, copper and nickel and brass all play nicely together.

EK's fault for bad plating that is flaking off on GPU blocks (GTX470 so far) and CPU (this is the first Supreme I've seen).

OP didn't use anything that would have had any negative effect on the plating. The denial by EK that there is a problem with their product seems to be the most frustrating issue to most users, the lack of interest by EK to rma and provide the appropriate service to support their products in normal usage and within the specs of the warranty.

Safe option is to just use regular copper from EK and not have to worry about flaky plating.

Ok like many I too already have the Supreme HF Full Nickel.

Also not everybody reports this problem so there must be more too it than just bad plating that causes it to flake.

And even if it is 100% EK´s fault is there a way to prevent it?
What coolant would you recommend ?

For example my loop consits of:EK Supreme HF Full Nickel
Phobya G Changer 1.2 :rad
Phobya 1080 Xtreme :rad
MCP 655
EK WB copper
Phobya Balancer 250 Silver Nickel
I only have nickel and copper in my loop how will I be able to prevent this?

If you have a block with a plating issue it's russian roulette. That's the problem- there is no way to protect against the flaking. I would recommend only using distilled.

Hmm.. seems stupid.
So far I have never seen anyone reporting this flaking problem with the HF Full Nickel.
I have researched this further and it seems to me these issues only have occured with older branches like Acetal/Nickel etc.

I will probably use distilled water + G48 (car antifreeze) most people seem to prefer this because it prevents corrosion and kills any algue growth and microorganisms:)

I run the gold edition, had no problems so far, but that said I have 2 nickel plated gpu vga supremes from Ek, no issues thus far... as far as additives... distilled, silver barbs, and a kill coil is plenty fine. No reason to add anything to prevent freezing as my rad never goes below the freezing temp...

The flaky mess comes from the sulfuric acid that the nickel is suspended in during the electroplating process, if the sulfur content is not STRICTLY controlled, or they used / reused there bath and didn't pay much attention to the chemistry/trash being introduced, when the plate went on, it took too much sulfur with it, and is lined underneath the nickel between the Copper and plating... any pores in the nickel plate will allow for ions to flow "ie. hydrogen" and bind with the sulfur, causing the flake to occur, sometimes referred to as ex-foliation... you see it in piss poor painting jobs and the like.

Maybe 1 out of 50 water coolers have ever bothered to do a chemistry on there loops, or even take a pH... impossible to say if its something in the loop or just a bad plating job... I suspect a little of both, and tend to err on the side of the customer that Ek did a less than stellar plate, or outsourced it without much in mind to QC especially on the rev. 1.2.

If Ek wont bother, as I said before, or alluded too, scrub the crap plate off and take it to get a rhodium plate... its just plating... not the end of the world...
