No reason to add anything to prevent freezing as my rad never goes below the freezing temp...

The flaky mess comes from the sulfuric acid that the nickel is suspended in during the electroplating process, if the sulfur content is not STRICTLY controlled, or they used / reused there bath and didn't pay much attention to the chemistry/trash being introduced, when the plate went on, it took too much sulfur with it, and is lined underneath the nickel between the Copper and plating... any pores in the nickel plate will allow for ions to flow "ie. hydrogen" and bind with the sulfur, causing the flake to occur, sometimes referred to as ex-foliation... you see it in piss poor painting jobs and the like.

Maybe 1 out of 50 water coolers have ever bothered to do a chemistry on there loops, or even take a pH... impossible to say if its something in the loop or just a bad plating job... I suspect a little of both, and tend to err on the side of the customer that Ek did a less than stellar plate, or outsourced it without much in mind to QC especially on the rev. 1.2.

If Ek wont bother, as I said before, or alluded too, scrub the crap plate off and take it to get a rhodium plate... its just plating... not the end of the world...

True but what if it enters the loop?

Also it could reduce the cooling performance.
And in what case would the accept RMA if that happens?

I have researched this further and it seems to me these issues only have occured with older branches like Acetal/Nickel etc.

I will probably use distilled water + G48 (car antifreeze) most people seem to prefer this because it prevents corrosion and kills any algue growth and microorganisms
Not sure what's stupid about chemistry or what makes the Acetal/Nickel less succeptible, you do realize the nickel is the problem right? I'd definitely suggest acrylic tops if you're going to risk the nickel so that you can see if it starts to flake.

Edit: At post above- if flakes enter the loop they can clog blocks or rads or possibly damage pump impellers. As for the RMA, not likely after a re-plate, but it seems to be hit or miss whether EK honors the warranty too. Effects on cooling performance will only be from clogs or other dammage, the copper underneath is still an effective cooler.

Le sigh, hope this isn't a major issue.

If it is then aquagrafx GPU blocks and HK CPU blocks

Yeah, I'm glad I stuck with the CU/Acrylic- top of the line performace and no worries of plating...

I don't think it would matter much if you got the most expensive EK block vs the cheapest, I'm sure they use the same nickel plating for both.

I could be wrong though.

Mine is the unplated version. It's cheaper because it's not plated, it's just the copper.

Oh sorry, completely misunderstood you then.

What's bad about that is it tarnishes quicker, but I guess you won't have any issues with nickel flaking off.

Tarnish hasn't been an issue on my various EK blocks, if it ever is then a little ketchup/diluted vinegar + toothbrush will bring it right back. Plus I like the look of the copper.
