Weekly Update - Friday March 4th, 2011

Thread Starter
Welcome to the new name of what used to be "OCN overtake predictions for the week of...". Shorter name, same great content!

Prizes for BOINCers Gone Bonkers 4 are being distributed right now. I am aware of a delay in management getting back to those that won the cash prizes. Management says "payments should be arriving on Monday."

Speaking of the next BGB, BOINCers Gone Bonkers 5 thread is up. Sign up now and donate a prize if you can. Stuff that you can donate include computer parts, gift certificates to online computer shops, steam game gifts, and more. Sign up and learn more about donating a prize by going here

In OCN BOINC member news, DarkRyder received the miracle of a child on February 22rd. Check it out here

The Projects of the Month for March 2011 have been selected. QMC@Home, Seti@Home and Yoyo@Home have been chosen. Read more about it and the goals that I set out for our team to accomplish with these teams here

I know that it is not BOINC related, but our Folding@Home team had 2 historic events occurring this week:
Our Folding@Home Team is now #3 in the world
Our #1 folder, Mark, is the first to achieve 100 million points!

Back to our BOINC Team, this week we are predicted to take the #40 position by overtaking the US NAVY team.

We are also looking to be in a great position to become a top 25 team by the end of 2011. Remember BOINCers, becoming a top 25 team is our big goal for 2011!

As usual, the overtake stats can be found here

We're already number 24 by RAC. Any chance we could up that?

We were 20 in RAC at one point, so yes, we can always up that!

Well.... If all goes according to plan I'll be adding a BOINC beast to the team by mid/end of summer so top 25 by 2011 shouldn't be too far of a stretch assuming that other teams don't do the same thing as I will.

My goal is to get an 8 core BD for CPU apps with a higher end HD7000 series GPU for the GPU apps (maybe even crossfired but that depends on if I'm willing to eat ramen for the rest of the year ). Either that or go to the good old trusty HD5850 for that high PPD/watt performance.

PS: I'm out of town at the moment so I'm only crunching on my laptop (yeah probably not a good idea but I've got a cooling pad and I've undervolted the CPU as well so heat generation isn't that bad)

a HD7000 series may not be coming out for a long time. That new 6990 just got reviewed today.

I'd say go for some 6000 series. Get dual 6950 perhaps?

Hopefully you accumulate the funds for that rig before the BD comes out (whenever they decide to release it)

Well, I expect to be able to accumulate the funds by mid/end of summer. I do have car payments, electricity, hydro, and other bills to pay but given my current budgeting trend and average bill payments I should have the money to blow on a new rig by then (assuming something horrible doesn't happen like breaking a leg and being out of work).

New plan (since it looks like my Zacate miniITX BOINC rig won't work out):

I think I'll go for an 8 core BD (if the rumours are to be believed it's looking like a kickass and powerful chip for scientific apps (assuming projects I attach to are recompiled to take advantage of the AVX/FMA capabilities)), and a 6990.

Only thing that concerns me is the power consumption of the 6990, but with close to 3100 unified shaders hitting close to 1.3TFlops DoublePrecisionFP it looks kickass and I'm sure if I undervolt it ever so slightly and overclock it a bit, it should perform even better but at $700 MSRP it's a bit steep since I'm not making it a dedicated BOINC rig but it will be mainly used for BOINC and some workstation programs I need to use (and games of course ).

EDIT: ....I looked at it closer and I missed the part about the 6990 being 2x 6970's on a single PCB but it does look quite promising as a scientific processing GPU and I guess if I clock it up to 880+ Mhz and drop the voltage ever so slightly (but keep it stable) it should be all good for not pushing my electricity bill up by a terrible amount. Although if I can somehow engineer a system that distributes "waste heat" from the scientific processing to one or two rooms in my place then I can save a bit of money on heating and theoretically be neutral on my utilities bill. I'm thinking if I can set it up to exhaust the "waste heat" out the door it could heat up my room and the hallway....

I guess the results of this setup and the average charge of the utility bills will be posted in Autumn/Winter if it goes through (if I don't get enough money I might get my hands on an Llano instead).

In the winter, placing the BOINC rig in the basement and letting it heat up that floor is amazing. Close the heat vents so hot air goes onto the other floors and you got yourself an efficient heating method

I cannot wait for Bulldozer!
