Server suggestions

Thread Starter
So, I have a real talent for aquiring servers, apparently, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with them:

Dell poweredge 6350 (to be given away soon)
Quad processor Xeon - Pentium II
1 GB RAM
3x 9.1 GB SCSI (10K)

IBM eServer 330 (Firewall/IDS?)
Dual processor Xeon - Pentium III
768 MB RAM (SDRAM)
2x 9.1 GB SCSI (10K)
Dual gigabit

IBM eServer 345 (iSCSI target/SAN?)
Dual Processor Xeon - Pentium IV 2.0 GHZ
3 GB RAM (DDR 266)
6x 36 GB SCSI (10K)
Dual Gigabit

HP Proliant ML350 (VMWare ESXi?)

Single Processor Xeon - Pentium IV 3.0 GHZ
4 GB RAM (DDR2 400)
3x 138 GB SCSI (10K)
1x 9.1 GB SCSI (10K)
Gigabit + ILO

We already have a webserver, and a box running FreeNAS.

So..I figured I'd make the Proliant my virtualisation server, because the speed and extra GB of RAM should make a big difference. It also has a dedicated RAID card and supports SATA. The single P4 @ 3 GHZ shouldn't lag far behind the 2x @2.0 GHz I think.

The IBM 330 should make a nice IDS when I run PFSense or Astaro on it, even though Astaro recommends 1 GB of ram (I tested it, works fine with just 512 if you disable the inline antivirus)

But...what to do with the IBM 345? A SAN/iSCSI target seems a nice use for it, but I already have 3 disks in RAID 5 in the virtualisation host. Anyhow, it's the best I can think of.

Your suggestions, please!

EDIT: ESX cluster?

The cluster itself could then be running:
Mumble
Minecraft
Radius
WUS (Windows Update Server)
And various stuff I want to test/mess around with

EDIT: Decision has been made, ESX cluster + IPS/IDS system
Please lock Mods

Internal webserver
Downloads machine
Rendering machines for your camera stuff if you do movies

The possibilities are endless and just end up how geeky you want to be/make your home

Hehe. Well, I prefer to migrate to a virtualised infrastructure (plus it'd be a good training with ESX), but a virtualised downloads machine is a pretty neat idea.

I have messed around with bucket rendering before, but I don't do enough 3D modeling to sacrifice some machines for it.

Internal webserver....why, exactly? Perhaps for a music streaming server (ampache)?

+rep anyhow

Since you obviosly found your answears, I'm just saying this if anyone else are wondering about such hardware.

I don't know what you are virtualizing, so I might be a little off there.

Id use one of the machines (The one with enough power & you can spare) for a good old XP install.
Put on uTorrent, a propper backup server prog, ++ & use this for backup & downloading.
The IBM e345 sounds good for this (plenty RAM & HD's)
Use 1 SCSI disk for OS, 1 SCSI disk for downloads, And the last 4 disk for backup (RAID of choice)

Well, you're actually quite close to my final setup.
The Poweredge will be given away
The IBM x330 is running Astaro Security Gateway
The IBM x345 is running ESXi 3.5
The Proliant is running Windows Server 2008R2 (it has a nice tapedrive with 9 400GB tapes). Future use might be a gameserver, WSUS server, domain controller, exchange stuff etc.

Sounds like a perfect setup....
Every house should have at least 3 servers...
Would surely generate a lot more work for me......
