If I were a Game developer I would never make sequels.

People can't seem to wait for continuations to their favorite IPs. I seem to be one of the few people enjoying the Crysis 2 demo.

But if I were in charge of a game dev I would avoid doing such a thing.

A planned trilogy or episodic game are different and not really what I mean.

Games like Crysis 2 or any game that was successful enough to warrant a second are all over the market. You'd have to be a fool to not grab that easy money. I don't agree.

Game makers run a good chance of alienating their current fan base while confusing the newcomers. They often spread themselves thin trying to make the die-hard fans happy while attracting those that didn't play the first one.

Also expectation are always to high for a game like that. Often the first game was groundbreaking or such a game changer that recreating that feeling of amazement is almost impossible. It's like trying to recreate the feeling of the first time you got some(sorry wrong forum).

New IPs are usually the only time we have these game changers. Sometimes enough time has gone by or tech has jumped enough that a game like CoD4 can happen. That is the exception not the rule.

This is the same reason, in most cases, why most bands first albums are their best, first movies in series are best or why a writer just can't recapture that magic they caught with their first hit.

I'm not saying these games aren't successes. They just try to please so many they please no one. Many of us don't get what we want or expect.
a) We expect to much. The first one blew my hat off now I want my socks gone.
b) They are running a business. Try to sell more than the first one. And this spreads the game thin.

I'm no fool. If I truthfully running one of these dev's I would be taking the money too. An annual CoD, how can you pass the cash up. From a fan POV though I never expect second or third installments in games, music movies, and books to rock my world like the first.

Like sex, it can get better, the subject matter could be of higher quality, but you'll never capture that first time excitement.

It's not to say they can't be great games. Some of my favs are sequels too. Mass Effect 2, love it, but they always planned that game that way. Everyone mostly agrees that CoD4 was a great game, there are always exceptions. Battlefield 2142 is a game I love(even though the lag makes it unplayable by today's standards. The point is, on an original IP you only get fans if the game is good. Look at Minecraft, if your game is good people will find it. If they ever decide to make a Minecraft2, you have to cater to your original fans and try to get all the people that heard of the first one but didn't buy for some reason. New game that's good almost everyone is happy, sequel were you try to make everyone's wishes true mostly no one ends up satisfied. I'm just tired of hearing that sequels don't live up to expectation so much.

I thought sex was supposed to get better with experience?

So wouldn't a series get better with maturity.
