Grabbed a D3100. Grabbed a 55-200 VR lens. Now, what are these magnets in the box for

Hey I'm looking for a decent but cheap as possible zoom lens preferably 55-300 or 70-300. I was looking at a couple of the really cheap $40 manual focus ones on ebay. Are they worth trying? I really don't have the money for a $300 lens.

Which is seen here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Cosina-Zoom-Came...13157308407375

Here is an amazon one with AF. Would the AF work with the 3100?

Amazon.com: Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Nikkor SLR
Camera Lens: Camera & Photo

EDIT: Everything else has been answered, so now my new question. What are these magnets for that came with the camera? There isn't any cables to clip them onto.

I would get a 55-200 VR. Trust me it pays off at the long end having vibration reduction.

I was looking at the 300 because I'm used to have a 15x P&S, and I like to do different zoomed landscape shots.

First rule of photography: If you're going to go cheap on something, go cheap on the body. Going cheap on the lenses is not a good idea.

With something like the 55-300mm, you get the convenience of a large focal length range, but you also get diminished quality. I second the 55-200mm VR suggestion. You lose the 200-300mm range, but you get superior optical quality. Besides, using 250-300mm is extremely difficult without a tripod, as those ranges are prone to camera shake which will lead to blurry images.

Alright. Well the 3100 is the base minimum of the body I want to get for the features it has unless I was to go with a sony... which I really don't want to do.

I've taken shots with the stock lens on a Cannon xsi which is the same focal range as the stock d3100 kit lens, and it was annoying not being able to take a closer picture than only like 10ft away. Will the 55-200 provide enough zoom distance over the regular 18-55 lens?

Also, If I was to get that cheap ebay lens as just an extra one and just manual focus it with a tripod, any idea if it would actually work with a 3100?

That manual focus lens probably wouldn't meter on the D3100--you'd be flying blind, so to speak. Also, the off-brand lenses from that era tend to be horrible in terms of sharpness and image quality.

Trust us, you'll kick yourself if you don't at least get the 55-200 VR. A fantastic lens that's a bargain at $200 brand new. If that's too much, you can get a refurb model from Adorama for $150.

EDIT: You can also get the D3100 kit from Adorama refurbished for $515. Nikon refurbs are fantastic deals.

I'm going to also not recommend the Cosina lens. It will likely have terrible image quality and if you're going to bother with a DSLR, there's no point in using crappy optics. It's like driving a Porsche with cheap tires. But for $30, I guess you can find out for yourself.

I also would recommend the 55-200VR as it is a high quality lens for the price. But, if you can't stretch your budget for that, the Nikon 70-300 non-VR lens you linked to would be the minimum I would recommend, though the VR version of that lens is significantly better.

One thing you need to realize is that DSLR lenses won't have the long focal length range you're used to with a P&S. There are some DSLR lenses with fairly large ranges, like the Nikon 18-200mm lenses (10X) and the largest that I'm aware of is the Tamron 18-270 (15X).

Most DSLR users realize this fairly soon and instead get a few, higher quality lenses to cover the most common range rather than looking for one lens to cover it all.

Alright, well I only had a 15x zoom anyway. So the is 200 is about a 10x then that would be good for me. I got the D3100 a little earlier then expected and grabbed it today. Very happy with it so far.

$550 brand new at Bestbuy price matching Amazon.

This would be best to go with?

Yes, but the Nikon 18-200 (either version) isn't cheap.
