2.1 Setup for Music (Receiver / Speaker Combo) $700 budget

post #1 of 25
Thread Starter
I'm moving into a house in May and want to invest in a wicked sound system for my room (average student sized room, maybe 14x14)

I'm using an Auzentech Forte 7.1, so digital input is an option.

After much convincing and weighing my options it appears that a great 2.1 setup is my best option. I mostly listen to music / game (Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Rush, Trance, Dubstep) I want to be able to sit in my room and be consumed by my music, you Pink Floyd fans know what I mean

I don't know very much about speakers.. but I'd like to come out with a receiver, a sub and two great speakers. Also, I would like to make sure that I can add speakers as I come into more money so that someday I will have a real 5.1

I use a Z5500 setup paired with a Asus D2X and it's been great. I listen to pretty much the same genres as you do and it works well, great bass, mids, highs. Love the remote. Though if your budget is higher than I would get S/PDIF out on the card to a receiver and to some nice bookshelf speakers.

For that budget all you can do is buy logitechs..get a real budget so you can get a receiver and real speakers. Logitech speakers miss alot of frequencies.

Folks I can definitely increase my budget Although I don't appreciate the manner in which you've suggested such an idea hick, kind of in bad taste.. don't you think? "get a real budget" - not neccesary..

What do you guys think is required to achieve my goals, I'll go as high as 6-700 if it will really help, sound is very important to me.. especially when listening to music.

Doing a 5.1/7.1 for a okay surround setup for 6-700 is going to be almost impossible. To be all honest for music listening all you really need is 2.1/2.0 setup. If you were going to be using this for hometheater I'd say go for surround sound.

Here's my recommendation:

Marantz SR5004 $350

Polk Audio Monitor70 Series II $220

Comes out to be 570 without shipping. You'll also need to add speaker cable to the list. So brings you in a little below budget. Really a subwoofer isn't absolutely necessary but if you want to add one I'd go with this.

Dayton SUB-100 HT $140

I know you said you wanted wall mounted, but if you wanted to go floor standing like Fox has posted you could grab the Jamo/Onkyo package that Tigerdirect offers;

Onkyo TX-SR608 Home Theater Receiver and Jamo S426HCS3 5pcs Home Theater Speaker System Bundle $599.99
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...897&CatId=4586

They also offer it with the Onkyo 508 for only $449.99

Difference between the 2 receivers is that the 608 will up convert all signals to hdmi and the 508 will only output what the input is.

They also have it with a yahmama receiver for $499.99
I don't know anything about that particular receiver, but it does include the iPod dock, but is only 5.1 where as the Onkyo's are 7.1 for future or zone two speakers.

Whoah whoah, there's a lot to take in here. Slyfox you're suggesting that I don't even bother with a 5.1 setup? You don't think that the $700 systems would be any good? I really like the idea of having the setup to use for games aswell, it's not like I will always only ever be listening to music. I don't know if even a great 2.1 will FILL my room with sound, which is what I want.

@invidiafanboy

It's too bad those setups don't include a sub, I have a ****ty 120w logitech sub, I really don't know if it's any good.. I definitely need a sub though. How much bass do the speakers alone produce? I do like feeling the thumps

I'm very unsure as what to do now. I really do think that a 700 setup will WoW me as I've never really heard a real sound system, I don't need TOP of the line, just something that will sound great.

*** What's the deal with the logitech 5.1 setups? are they any good.. or really just a gimmick?

I would sugest going at it this way. I found my reciver on craigslist for $100 and it was in mint condition so i would start there. For speakers persionally i would start with 2 speakers and a sub. That should eat up most of the budget so i would save till you could afford to get the center and surrounds. Mostly with this buget you have you may have to go with used.

EDIT: with the music type you listion to i would recomend a ported 10" or a 12" sub.

What receiver did you pick up? I got a Sony with a DAC for $60, which I slightly regret. I had to beat in the relay because it stopped working.

You're on the right track with the receiver + speakers idea. Gives you much more options and the best speaker and sound quality available on the market. Usually kind of eliminates the need for a sound card if you're using the receiver's DAC too.
