It looks like an easy task to get this bugger open, but alas, the screws are as tight as a rabbits ass.

any tips on loosening screws?

(and sorry for the crap quality, and blur XD)

if it happens with just the controller, its most definitely your controller shorting the usb pins out. if its any usb device, then its shorting inside your laptop. it'd probably be better to send it in to manufacturer if you have warranty on it. if not then crack it open
If it were in the computer then it wouldn't make it past the bios.
Your computer is fine, it's just the adapter thing.

lol.. screw driver with a large handle = more leverage and make sure your bit fits in nice and tight or you'll strip the screws.. I know you already know this stuff.

I see your precision screw driver there. you can use that but also use a pair of pliers on the screw driver for ultimate leverage. If you get my drift.

Yup, but alas, this gets worse and worse, because i don't have a large handle screwdriver with the correct bit size...

Only got a crappy Jewelers set of screwdrivers with the right bit...

Actually, couldn't I just wrap something round the handle?

haha alright.

When you smash it open with a hammer just post a pic of the pcb here (assuming it's not mangled ), I or someone else will help you figure out what is causing the short.

Are those cracks on the underside I see in the last photo? that could cause a short.

get a replacement.

its hard to tell from the pics, just look for any stray globs of solder or if there are any joints that are connected to an adjacent joint.
