i7 950 running very hot with stock coolers

Thread Starter
Hello, I have a slight problem or so I think, and hope you'll be able to help me smile.gif.

I have a i7 950 3.07GHz with stock coolers and no overclocking done (from gpu-z: corespeed: 1604MHz x 12 multiplier).
In idle temperature it's sitting around 40C. I decided to try and stress test it with prime95 and after only 5 minutes of running I'm reaching 80C, which seems awfully hot even for the stock cooler, or so I would think?
With these kind of temperatures; I'm not left any room to OC without changing the cooler, am I?

Is this normal with the stock cooler or could something be wrong with mine?

Prime95 didn't report any errors yet (only 5 mintues), picture included of core temp:

Edit I just realized something, shouldn't the core speed in cpu-z be displaying 3000 something and not 1600? Or am I just clueless? biggrin.gif

1. Clean the top of your processor mildly using alcohol and a soft cloth.
2. Buy and apply a good thermal paste.
3. Buy a aftermarket cooler.

yeah, like people have said before me: That looks about right for a stock cooler. You can pick up the coolermaster hyper 212+ for about £15 in the UK (about $20 methinks) which is pretty good for it's price, also nice if you plan on doing a little bit of overclocking of course wink.gif

If you are a Pro Overclocker get one of the Noctua coolers like the NH-D14 one of the best CPU coolers around atm but yeah the Hyper 212+ seems to be a pretty good cooler also

Did you use the existing paste that was on the stock cooler?

Is that when you are idle? or underload? You probably have Speedstep enabled by default. It's perfectly normal, basically the BIOS downclocks the cpu speed when it's not under stress and raise it again when it is to save power.
