There are some enclosures like this one that would allow this.

I use a external DVD RW via USB and have not noticed any difference to my internal sata DVD RW.

yes, esata is sata
some esata ports are powered, with others you will need an external power supply

this has everything, usb esata and power supply

It will work as well as SATA, but with a DVD drive I doubt you'll see a difference between eSATA and USB; the thing that will limit your speed the most is going to be the speed of the DVD drive, not the method you're using to transfer the data from the drive to the PC. Think of how fast you can copy a file on your computer from a DVD vs how fast you can copy a file on your computer to a different location (say, from my documents to your desktop). Using an eSATA enclosure instead of a USB one isn't going to change that, so I'd just look for whatever is cheaper.

However, if you may get an external hard drive in the future, know that using eSATA for a hard drive would be quite a bit faster than USB. If you have limited eSATA ports on your computer, it would probably be better to go with a USB DVD drive so you could use both at the same time if you needed to.
