Ext. Hard drive help

Thread Starter
Okay, I don't know if this is the right section, please move it if it's wrong.

I got an external hard drive. It used to work great, until one day my explorer.exe crashed.
I tried opening it again, but I couldn't access it because something was missing.
So I tried formatting it, without success, 'cause windows couldn't format.
I used Acronis Disk Director, which could format the hard drive, and so I did.

So this is the point where I am now. When I tried to access the hard drive, I can browse, but if I try to transfer anything onto it, it starts with like 25mb/s and then drops down to like 1mb/s, and just stops transfering.
Then when I try to cancel the transfer, it freezes, and I have to unplug the drive to stop it.

Some info:
-Name of the hard drive: WD Ext HDD 1021

Other specs can be found on my signature .
Thanks in advance.

Try running chkdsk on it.

How long have you had it? Is it still in warranty. If so, you can have it repaired/replaced but you will probably lose all you data. Do you have a backup of the data on it?

There is the possibility that the logic chip that connects the housing to the hard drive is malfunctioning, and that the drive itself is fine. You always have the option (though it voids your warranty) to open the housing and use the drive as-is.

You could try to wipe it (low level format). I use http://www.whitecanyon.com/wipedrive...hard-drive.phpWipeDrive all the time to rebuild my system if it just seems to be getting bogged down. It's saved my hind end a number of times.

Perfect.

Sounds like your drive is done and the only way to make sure would be remove the drive from the case and connect it directly to the MB.

This will pinpoint if the drive is bad or if the case's interface is bad but it will void your warranty.

This is why you don't purchase premade external drives but instead buy your own HD with a separate case and put the drive in the case.

Good Luck!

Sorry for replying this late, I was busy with school and stuff... :S

Anyways, I figured out it's not in warranty anymore, so I guess I gotta try opening it. Now I never did something like that before, and I don't know how to.

So could any of you explain me how to do this, or give me a link for some guide?

Thanks in advance .

The only way I've ever done it is to unscrew every screw, look under all plastic/rubber feet, and check under every sticker for a hidden screw.

Then just start prying it open to locate those hidden "clip together" thingies.

Good Luck!

Okay, opened it up, connected it, but windows doesn't detect it, and neither does the BIOS. Any suggestions? Or does this mean it's just broken?
