surely if your gpu supports dxva, cpu doesnt really matter
post #12 of 21
I have a Northwood P4 @ 2.6 with a PCI Geforce 6200 which plays HD content without stutter. That's not much power so you should be good to go.

uhhh thanks for the input guys but when I had a 2.8 northwood with a 7600 I could not play hd content how are you guys doing it with cards that arent even hd capabale? I thought anything before the 8 series cards couldnt handle those resolutions. Hmmmm looks like next week I got something to do. Not going to be streaming anything just going to use for htpc. My dvd players usb thingy is busted so Just need something I can pop a usb stick into and play a movie off of. Im too busy the next few days but ill get one up and running and let you guys know how it turned out.

I'm really interested in how this turns out as I'm buying a 3.0 Hyper-Threaded Northwood of a fellow OCN'er for a HTPC rig. I've been worried about how much RAM to buy whether to go with 1 or 2gb and then all I need to watch for is a decent low-profile video card. The sound card, HDD upgrade, and TV tuner can come later.

Yeah, I was WAY wrong with this statement. There is no truth, I cannot play HD content with this setup.
I received REP with this statement so I feel a little ashamed. When I played say, a 1080p video of LOTR, it kept up, for about three seconds, and then the audio started to lag behind.

So to the Original poster, I sincerely apologize for misleading you in any way.

Thank you,

1080p is definitely much more tricky. The P4 HT setup I mentioned earlier in this thread falls on it's face when trying to play 1080p material, but like I said earlier, 720p is no problem.

I assembled my P4 3.4ghz Prescott (1gb ddr) last friday -just to retest playback- and I tried to play tvr files off mce and it was choppy and it got progressively worse within minutes (it was a fresh win7 install) . So I put it back in the box. It probably would make a good linux (arch) project in the future.

I just ordered a GT 430 today and I am hoping that it will give me the performance I need to play my Blu-rays. I will report back with my results.

update (1 last try) >
I installed community codecs on my p4 rig (see sig below) and connected it to a 40"lcd. Initially I played some MCE recorded TV in full screen and the video was not so smooth. I would manually resize the video to a smaller screen and the video fluidity improved. I rebooted the computer just to rule out that it might have needed one and also I installed IE9 so it might have interfered with the codec install. Lo and behold I played the same video in full screen and it was much better now. > And to think its running on an old agp 7600gs (256mb?) with only 1gb of system memory. The colors seemed a little bled out but it was good either way. Not bad for an ancient system. Just thought Id share this info. BTW the recorded programs were in HD-the tv will tell me its 1080p (60hz) but I cant be certain that it is.(could be 1080i)

Just got the GT 430 today and have it installed. Thought it wouldn't work at first but then once I used the packaged drivers instead of the most recent drivers it worked perfect. I'm currently using it to play Iron Man 2 on Blu-ray with no flaws or stuttering. I also get perfect audio through HDMI. It's a great card and will definitely confirm that socket 478 works...with the right GFX card.
