If you buy hardware specifically for folding, you are making the assumption that it will work in the long term. History has told us that it could change any day. It's all about using your spare GPU cycles when you are not gaming or something.
I'll be honest... I bought the Radeon 5970 with the intention of having it fold when the new client came out "soon". Over a year later here I am with my dual 6970s and the new client isn't out yet. I could have bought what worked at the time (GTX 295 followed by Fermi), but I didn't. I made the assumption that they would release GPU3 for ATi pretty soon.
