Gets to 610$ ~ You don't see the DVD drive but it's 18$ Asus. You have 20$ mail-rebate from the card. And it will get a bit more that 650$ with 13%. So you get the 6870 for the price of 6850 with mail rebate.
Thanks, 610 is about 60$ more so I can just tell him if he wants the better gpu to pay extra. But all the stuff in my shopping cart disappeared so I will have to find all the parts again and add them. In which case I can refer to your build here.

Another question though: what are the main differences between the 770 780 ect. and the 870 880? I'm not familiar with AMD motherboards.

More cores doesn't = better performance, and that is a slower cpu.

Edited my post, I meant hex core.

yeah sure u can always get a 460 GTX even OC'ed edition which runs close to the hd 6870 for 180$. But don't pay 30$ more for the Ph II 965, get the 955. At worst slightly OC it. And get 1600 mhz ram whatsoever for 40-50$

Greenhold's suggestion is okay, just swap for M4A87TD EVO which has a much better & safer 8+2 VRM for same price (or GA-870A-UD3, similar price)

So this over this?

If I were to get him the more expensive motherboard I droped the CPU from a 965 BE to a 955 BE to keep it at 551 before tax.

Also does the 460 really match a 6870? Which version are you referring to? Right now I have the Gigabyte Radeon HD 6850 Windforce (which is overclocked) for 188$, can something better be had for that price?

Alright so taking into account some of the advice here is the final build coming up to about 551$ + 13% tax (70$) and shipping.

I think the 460 could match a 6870 when overclocked, I'm not too sure though as I'm no video card expert

The 870, 880, and 890 are chipsets. The differences are well explained here.

ASUS M4A87TD Evo AM3 : 114$ very good choice too price match on direct canada 103$

http://www.directcanada.com/products...nufacture=ASUS

As for the gfx on some games the 460 beats the 6870. Others not.

HD 6870 vs Hd 6850 vs GTX 460 all OC'ed and not benchmarks.
