Laptop Freezing up during Windows Install

I've got a Toshiba Satellite A205 that would lock up occasionally. I figured the problem was the hard drive, so I replaced the hard drive. However, it still locks up during the "Expanding Windows Files" part. I ran memtest overnight and it didn't show any errors. What's going on?

USB or CD install?

Cd

Try making a USB install and see if that makes a difference. I know I had this problem with a Dell laptop. Basically copied the contents of the CD. Used WinToFlash to flash the stuff to a USB key and I was good to go, not to mention the install was faster than what it was with a CD. Worth a try.

I'll try that, although it was locking up in the previous install of windows, so I don't know what the issue is.

Typically it is a ram or hard drive issue.Seems to be neither in your case but if you have 2 sticks of ram,try it with just one. Also maybe there is a bad connection between your hard drive and motherboard. Finally although unlikely maybe it is a overheating issue.

Just some of my thoughts.

I'm doing a full format on the new drive for the install. I'll try the next install on one stick of ram. And the though of a bad connector crossed my mind, but how would I diagnose that?

I ran a full format and installed with one stick of ram. As opposed to freezing around 17%, it made it to 77%. I'm going to full format again and try the other stick of ram.

Hmm, so I've ran memtest86+ overnight and there are no errors. I found out the I/O errors I was getting were from the optical drive, and apparently it's something that happens fairly often after a ubuntu install. Anybody have an idea of what it is?

Have you tried the USB install yet, since you said something might be faulty with the optical drive.
