A spongy substance that could be mistaken for packing material has the nanotechnology world buzzing. University of Central Florida Associate Professor Lei Zhai and postdoctoral associate Jianhua Zou have engineered the world's lightest carbon material in such a way that it could be used to detect pollutants and toxic substances, improve robotic surgery techniques and store energy more efficiently.

The new material belongs to the family of the lightest solid, also known by its technical name of aerogel or its common nickname of "frozen smoke."

Previous aerogels were made of silicon. This is made of carbon nanotubes. It's not the same old stuff that's been around since the 30s.

As far as I know, the carbon aerogels to date have been made of tiny carbon-based particles bonded together. Making it out of multiwalled nanotubes seems to be new.

Edit: in 2004, researchers at the University of Cambridge were able to make an aerogel made of a mixture of single-walled and multi-walled nanotubes. If these researchers have made aerogel from purely multiwalled nanotubes, that's new.

nano..yes. You are correct, and I am mistaken.

This is similar to what I was referring to..it is not of nano-based construction, but similar in function.

Cool stuff, thanks for the correction

Couldn't they put this in like Android skin So that they could have a sense of touch that was uber sensitive?
From what I can tell it also can create a sense of smell.
