Calling all experts and those with a fetish for details

Warning: Don't read this if u don't enjoy being grilled with enough questions to make a murder interrogator cringe.*

So I have had this AMD 3500+ computer for the last 5 years and it's time for an upgrade. Here is the breakdown:

Goal: I'm a gamer who is mainly into real time strategy games like Shogun 2. I would like to play this at the max settings. I would also like a PC that can play most games at max settings for the next couple of years. The capability to edit my home movies from a Sony HD camcorder would be nice too.*

Experience: *I would say I know more than the average person about computers but I am by no means an expert. This is my first attempt at overclocking so I would like something that is user friendly.*

Budget: $2000

Here is what I planned on buying so far:

Intel 2600k
8gb g skill DDR 2133 (2 x 4gb) ripjaws X turbulence II
EVGA 580 GTX Super OC
1 TB WD Caviar black SATA 6 gb
Lite-On DVD*+R
Cooler Master HAF X NVIDIA edition case
Corsair 850 HX series power supply
Windows 7 premium

Here are the questions:

1). *Obviously I don't have a motherboard. Which should I get when the revised boards come available? *I'm looking for something that is overclocking friendly but I don't need all of the bells and whistles.*

2). Is the RAM overkill for what I want to do with it? *

3). Is that case ($200) worth the price? *New egg is offering the phantom case for about 150. I'm looking for a case with performance first. If it looks nice that is a bonus but not required.*

4). Is that power supply good enough or do I need more? *I would like to stick with Corsair because there are good deals right now unless Corsair's aren't reliable. I would like to go SLI in 6 months when the price goes down. Also I read with my case I will need an 8 pin extender. Where can I find that on new egg?

5). What is a great aftermarket cooler for the 2600k that will work with my case? *I would like to stick with air cooling.*

6). What is a great gaming monitor in the 23 - 27" range?

Am I missing anything? *

Looks good! That computer will last you years to come. I'll answer a few questions...

Case, I think 200 for that case is overkill but hey it looks nice. Look at a 650D or similar. Antec have some good cases for the price. Cant beat those.

As for air Cooling, Anything aftermarket would work better then the Stock one. Orb coolers Tuniq Tower Man, you name it.

Your Ram is not overkill. It'll be good for editing.

And the PSU is just fine, It will run SLi just fine as well. Not over kill. Dont get a 1000Watt, that would be over kill.

As for gamming, 22-26" for gaming i prefer. Everything else just streches the pixels.

Ram is overkill. Save the money and apply it to somewhere else. The difference it makes in editing shouldnt be too much. i'd stay with 1600/1866, but the gains with 2133 is not worth the price premium.

psu is fine.

case is meh- if you have 2k to drop on a computer, id go with watercooling and get a corsair 650d or anything from the obsidian line instead of the hafx- which i find to be very ugly, but to each his own and you dont want to WC.

there's a nice deal on one of the top air coolers out right now. a silver arrow for around 6x + shipping.

edit: here it is

I'll answer the ones I can at the moment.

The ram is pretty overkill for what you intend to use the system for but if you do a lot of editing I would recommend anything in the 1600-1866 range.

The HAF-X case is great and if you intend to have most of your gear air cooled it's the best you can get. I would go for the regular version though since it's a bit cheaper these days. I think its about 179-189 at newegg at the moment.

The power supply is a good choice. 580's in SLI with a 2600k will draw about 750w give or take. An 850 should provide you with all the headroom you need.

As for aircooling I tend to steer clear of them because out of personal preferences but if a Noctua DH-14 cooler, a Silverarrow, or the other most commonly suggested air coolers will do just fine.

1. The new revision motherboards are available already. At least here in the Netherlands they are. You could look into the Asus P8P67 models.. they're quite stable from what I read and don't have all the extra's.

2. Imo, the ram speed is an overkill. You might be better off with 1600's. * gigs is terrific of course

3.Case is quite expensive, though looks really nice! Just goes to show how much that Nvidia logo on it is worth ^^

4. 850W should be more than enough. Can't say much about the PSU itself though.

5. Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme.. hands down.

6. no idea bud

I would say the ram speed is overkill but not the amount. 8 gigs is good for video editing purposes. As mentioned above 1600mhz would be fine.

Why not put an SSD in? That would help in a lot of ways. Overall you'd see a nice speed improvement in the system. So say 120gb ssd + 1tb hd. I think you'd see the difference when you were encoding videos. OCZ vertex drives are great.

I've been perfectly happy with my Asus 23" LCD. I don't think most would put it in the "great" category but for the price it's a really good value. I do game art and design so quality was definitely important to me.

Power supply should be fine.

As for the case, I think the Nzxt Phantom is pretty "sexy"
http://www.nzxt.com/new/products/crafted_series/phantom

I've been quite happy with my Zalman 9700 for CPU cooling, looks good too, though I'm not entirely certain they have a bracket for the sandybridge chips yet.

If you edit a lot, ram is NOT overkill.. perhaps a smidge with the speed, as throughput to your hard drives is also a factor. 1600 could fit you just fine.. unless you edit professionally on a number of different apps, you wont notice the difference.

I edit daily, and no, more ram is not always better,(higher memory amounts lead to file fragmenting during renders and exports) but 8gbs is great. I am about to order 4 more for my sig rig to help out with renders..

As for the members saying to use ssd for video.. you'll need more then just 128gb. Yes store you apps on the ssd if you get one.. but it wont really help with encoding unless ALL media is on the drive with it. I have the CS5 suite installed, and my c drive is at 110 gbs, with a few games. Video adds up quick too.. thats why my media is all on another 1tb, with additional footage on NAS or FW800 drives.

consider this case. I have done 2 builds with it and it is very nice (build quality) has great features (movable hdd cages, easily removable/swappable fans, dust filters exc) lots of room, great looks, available windowed side door, built in fan controller, usb 3.0 ready, easy cable management with grommetted wire holes, exc) and is on sale for $115 plus shipping (after rebate)

I highly reccomend it for a mid-tower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...39003&Tpk=600t

this looks to be a good motherboard and is 1/2 the price of the asus maximus extreme.
Both pci-e slots run at 16x so it would be good for SLI down the road and supports sata 3 and usb 3. It's sold out atm but i'm sure they'll get some more instock soon.

I can't seem to find a good sandy bridge mb in stock? Anyone know where I can pick one up? Also does the ripjaws x series really work better for intel or is that just marketing?
