NIC Bypass Adapter?

Thread Starter
So I'm trying to find a PCIe x1 dual port NIC - I know they're out there but they're hard to find. But then I come across this, and I start scratching my head a bit:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-PRO-1000-PT-Quad-Port-Bypass-Server-Adapter-/310296584015?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483f1e1f4f#ht_3584wt_830

A quad-port (potential yay! [yes I know that's not x1 though]) bypass adapter (headscratch.gif ). And I can't seem to find what all is meant by a bypass adapter. I take it it's not the same as a standard NIC obviously, but what exactly is the use of a bypass adapter?

Also, if anyone knows of any PCIe x1 dual port NICs that'd be awesome too! biggrin.gif

It's exactly what it sounds like...traffic can bypass the host computer and be transmitted directly from one port on the NIC to another. It's like the NIC itself is its own mini-router.

For example, if you have a server that's a firewall between your router and your computers, this thing would keep your internet connection from going down when the server crashes or has to reboot or whatever.

As for the PCI card, this is the cheapest one I could find:
