8 Vertex II 120GB - LSI 9260-8i vs 3Ware 9750 : Fight! WITH FastPath Key Also now.

UPDATE: POST #6 Updated with FastPath hardware key added to LSI 9260-8i

Well after the original thread here http://www.overclock.net/raid-controllers-software/949900-2-c300-vs-4-vertex-ii.html and some issues with controller vs ssd vs stripe sizes..

Also in LSI 9260-8i I also included 1GB ATTO tests.

Part Deux:

Finally ...............

LSI 9260-8i Controller with 8 OCZ Vertex II 120GB Drives in Raid 0:

Lessons learned:

The 3Ware 9750-8i is a great card and 3ware/LSI tech engineers are amazing at helping troubleshoot issues. The bottom line is that the 3Ware 9750-8i is a very similar of the LSI 9260-8i (nearly identical to 9261-8i) with biggest differences being the port location being rear facing on the 3ware 9750-8i BUT most importantly the firmware and optimization routines.

The 3ware card does not handle multiple fast SSD NEARLY as well as the 9260-8i. AIf you look at the WRITE results above you can clearly see a major issue in 4K numbers while on the 3Ware card. The engineer looked at my controller logs and basically found ATA-7 commands being sent to the Vertex II that the drives do not understand lol. The 3ware card *WOULD* work GREAT on Kingston/Intel/ADATA SSD's as they more closely meet the SATA / ATA spec specifically with SAS command sets ; however not that great with OCZ frown.gif

Best of all these 8 drives push the LSI 9260-8i to its limits in raw bandwidth .... seeing 1.2GB/s -> 2.5GB/s is a pretty amazing feat with access times so low in comparison to the 3ware card.

Also .... the drives are configured with

Access Policy : Read/Write
Disk Cache Policy: Enabled
Read Policy: Read Ahead with BBU (Battery Backup Unit)
IO Policy: Cached IO
Write Policy: Write Back
Stripe Size: 256K*

* : I chose 256 as it made minimal negative difference comparitively to 64/128 , but improved significantly on sequential read/write; I move a lot of very large files so for me this was important.

Also... the CrystalDiskMark tests above were made running a 1GB test file **NOT THE DEFAULT 100MB FILE**

Nice numbers.

Any chance of some tests with FastPath on the 9260?

Ordered it ... But the 9260-8i (Unlike the 9261-8i) requires the hardware dongle/key & will take about a week to get it in. I'm itching to see the results also !

Bought the LSI FastPAth key and I have to say pretty BIG difference on the LSI 9260-8i.

(This is with 8 drives in a Raid 0 array for each test. See POST below for two 4 drive Raid 0 arrays for side by side comparisons)

So for kicks and giggles:

I broke the eight drive array into two 4 disk arrays and created 2 virtual drives from it to compare 1:1 performance. The left side of the image in RED box is with FastPath DISABLED the right side is with FastPath ENABLED .

Something to note is that in order to turn on FastPath you effectively have to change the Virtual Drive properties to disable caching/read ahead/writeback etc. However, the 4K scores and the AS SSD scores are WAY better.

Ultimately depends on what the drives will be doing. For heavier I/O like database, web serving etc... FastPath will make a huge difference in your favor as well as I would guess the boot drive partition.

I tested with all 8 drives and FastPath and I was seeing >150K iops. I have a 9265-8i which is the newest successor to this controller coming next week with 1GB of ddr3 cache and > 450K iops so im curious to see how it will fare.

Last one one till the 9265-8i arrives.

Full 8 Drive Fastpath Enabled test.

8 x OCZ Vertex 2 120GB on LSI 9260-8i with FastPath Hardware Key installed and recommended FastPath Controller Settings.

Now this is all SSD performance w/o the raid controller caching anything.

Hello was wondering if you a RAID 0 Templete you could send me for what settings I should use to configure 3 SATA III 120Gb SSD drives with the LSI- 9260-8i?

I am very new to Raid cards especially one this advanced I have only set up VERY basic Raid 0's in the past using on board raid controllers.. AKA EASY wink.gif

Any help would be GREATLY apperciated your bench marks you got with the OCZ drives where AWESOME!! Trying to see what I can get with 3 Mushkin 120GB SATA III drive model MKNSSDCR120GB they are the Chronos Edition.

Thanks guys!
