I agree with those that say $300 will make for a better investment quality wise.
I got an old dell pc for free. Has a p4 2.8ghz/cdrw/512mb ram/etc. Contemplating on using the micro atx case. Good thing is it's not an old ugly beige case, it is a black one that actually looks good. So the case money I can now use toward other components.

I have ubuntu on this machine and it really performs quite well. originally had windows xp and was super slow with that OS. Now it Plays 720p h264 videos full just fine, word processing, etc. I was surprised how well the computer performs for an 8 year old pc. Crazy. It almost doesn't feel right to just toss the other parts.

I am in danger of failing the $200 target zone unfortunately. I have gone amd instead, so this thread really should be in the amd build log unfortunately. I could of gotten a dual core e6500 for $70 but for $30 more I went ahead with the Phenom 2 X4 840 Quad core w/ free Asus motherboard combo deal at microcenter for $99...or $108 with tax. This just seems better since this way, I didn't have to get a used board or cpu and I had some kind of warranty.

There is no way I can meet the $200 budget with this purchase decision. I am at $161 so far with case, motherboard, gpu, and cpu. I still need ram, hard drive, power supply, and dvdrw drive...some how for $39. Not going to happen.

I'm hoping to at least do it within a $300 range or better yet less, as that is how much a new ps3/xbox 360 cost at the moment. But hey, that would still be a $300 or < quad core set up with a Radeon 4850 1gb card that can play todays games just fine and run any app there. Not the fastest but considerably powerful enough to handle anything.

Got the $53 4850 however and it looks good:

Mod please move to amd build log.

Oh, my, she's a beauty!
I got my 4870 for 90$ 3 months ago, but I am in denmark, where prices are 200%...

The CPU + mobo seems a very good deal

Cheers!

Yah I think there was a gtx260 deal for $80 around that time as well. I wasn't in the market then however, but I wish I was. Those deals only last like 4 hours so you have to spot it at the right time.

Use the laptop hdd the hd will cost too much of your remaining budget to be worth it. I understand trying to find deals, but use what you have and find deals on better parts for the rest.

I built the rig:

XFX 4850: $47
DVDRW Drive: $19
500GB 7200rpm WD Caviar Blue hard drive: $39
Phenom X4 840 / Asus Combo deal at microcenter: $99
Used Black Dell Case from abandoned pentium 4 rig - Free
650 watt rosewill green psu - $50
4GB DDR3 Sector 5 ram - $40

$294 After rebates.

Less than what a ps3 slim would cost new and more powerful, more versatile, providing a much better gaming experience.

I've been running a few games and must admit, this thing hauls. If gaming is your only concern I think this would really be an outstanding system for gaming or whatever your doing. The 4850 was $47 AR and that's what made this whole thing possible, along with the phenom x4/asus $99 combo going on right now.

I am giving this to a family member, this was never for me . They will be very happy coming from a Pentium 4 system with windows xp and an nvidia 4400 ti or something like that, lol. Talk about a massive upgrade.

I left the P4 badges on the original case as well, lol.

If you guys are interested here is the link to the 4850:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Tpk=xfx%204850

4850 went up in price, use to equal $47 after the $13 off code and $30 rebate.

Here is the link to the motherboard combos: http://www.microcenter.com/specials/...ndlePROMO.html

I chose the phenom x4 840/Asus M4N68T-M V2 Socket AM3 630a mATX**

Any overclocking tips with this processor. What do you need to push the x4 840 to not bottleneck...say a 5970 on a 1080p monitor?
