@OP apparently a 6990 runs at 6950 clocks but can be switched to OC mode (second bios ) to 6970 clocks so expect stock performance to be between 6950 and 6970 CF when in stock mode.
yes exactly. it is not 2 5850's.

HOW many times do people have to be corrected on the 5970.

They are two DOWNCLOCKED 5870's. They did this to sit under the 300W limit of the card. There's no if's, no buts, thats the fact. Just look at my 3D Mark scores in my siggy. The 6990 will be 2x 6970's downclocked.

May this post please be seen by all those misinformed in the world who think they know better.

Likely will be 15% or so better then your current set up, not a terrible idea to try and get rid of the 5870's soon since they are dropping fairly quickly in price, looking around 185-200$ for one right now (Reference), I've seen couple times Non-Ref XFX or something drop to 200$, but Reference models should still pull in $.

I'm holding off all together on upgrading and waiting till my next build in 2 years ish.

Okay okay sorry, than some of my sources got confused thinking that because of the clocks they were 2x 5850's
