You won't need an extremely fast processor, maybe sandy bridge i3? Anywhere between 2-4gb ram because its pretty cheap. Not sure about sound cards, I will look into them

I disagree with the above posters.. music production (depending on DAW, external devices, how many spores you use on average, etc etc) needs a good processor and LOADS of ram. How else do you expect to run at least 8 live spores in your DAW? Not even taking into consideration the VST's you'll be throwing over them. Have you looked at your external devices and taken MIDI into consideration?

Or is Reason your only music making program?

This is why I suggested MAC g5 its proven to record well I bought my dad a dual 2.0 with 16gb of mem and he has the m-audio device I suggested and I also bought him another board , he uses pro logic and it works fine for him it produces the same quality if not better than his mini studio and he's been playing and recording for over 30 years

lol mac.

I'd get a good core based cpu, loads of ram and expansion cards reuired for it. if your not gaming at all, he can easily get a gt 430 and be fine even if he plays the sims and such the gt 430 will max that
I love Corsair

With a $900 budget he'd better be using the onboard graphics card instead of wasting money on a card he'll never see nor use optimally.

Low end i3, H67 board, 4gb of ram, no gpu just use the sandy bridges igp (which is pretty decent actually), 2 F3 hdd's, a m-audio midi from bestbuy, and save the rest of your money and save up a little more for some studio monitors. The BX5A's are a good start and can be found for 200-250$. The next step up from those would be the BX8A's, or you could go with the KRK RP6G2's or RP8G2's. Would recommend a good flat set of monitor can's too. Something like the Audio Technica ATH-M50's are a great start and can be found under 100$.

Wow i totally forgot about a sound card LOL. Go w/ a Asus Xonar ST/STX.
