replacement for 5970

Thread Starter
My 5970 has gone kaput so I was thinking of getting a replacement for it while its on RMA. Gigabyte 6850 crossfire came to mind.

I was thinking of selling either one of it when the 5970 is back from RMA. a single 6850 will cost about $209 AUD. I'm watching one in ebay which hopefully won't go over $200 AUD.

or.. should i get a 6950 ($328 AUD) and flash it to 6970.

I'm gaming at 1600 x 1200 reso.

what do u guys think?

I think a 5970 should still run around 450-500 AUD? (not 100% sure on conversion sry)

Ya definetly not a bad idea if you want to pick up a card that will hold you over for the time being till next series comes out in 4 months here, depending on what games you holding on to.

I know I still want a powerhouse of GPU's but half the time find my self playing Minecraft or some other low usage game =D

Honestly CF setups aren't that great, they show well in some benchmarks but results are mixed.

Your better off with ya a 6950, or a 570.

Honestly I've been moving more towards Single GPU domination and I tend to like Nvidia more for single GPU solutions.

Yes, you can cf them as long as they are the same type. Brand does not matter.

Yes you can, if your RMA is going to be that long getting a weaker card like a 6850 isn't a terrible idea but honestly CF'n in isn't worth it if its only temporary.

Ya if you sold your 5970 and 6850's should buy a 6990, but still sinking alot into getting 6850's which aren't as desirable since the Nvidia's came out.

I would recommend getting something comfortable and riding it out till 7XXX and not jumping on every Dual GPU that is release just for saving money's sake.

So far I get a new GPU every 2-3 GEN's and that generally works fine, getting one every gen is just silly =P, and 5970 can run anything incredibly, unless your like me with Eyefinity which destroys cards.

Doesn't matter which type actually, Can CF a 6850 and a 6870, called CFX, not sure if you can CF 68XX and 69XX though don't think so, either way wouldn't be good for performance.

6850 + 6870 is just bad x.x likewise for 6950 + 6970, they are closer to 6X50CF.

Best off crossfiring same types yes but you can crossfire different, 5970 + 5870 or 5850 works quite nice.

I went from dual 5970s to a single 6970 and couldn't be happier. Getting rid of all the issues that crossfire brings was a relief.
