hi
i just received this rig as payment for some bookbinding;

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L rev 2.0
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz

GIGABYTE GV-NX96T512H-B GeForce 9600 GT 512MB

2 CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C48

500w power supply

sata dvd and hdd

plugged it in

fans started, stopped, stared again, then posted into XP

next day fans didn't even groan

pulled out of case, installed just video card and one stick of memory

cleared cmos for a day, then put the battery back in, set bios default

computer started

now the fun begins!

using "Darik's Boot And Nuke" to wipe the hdd as you read this. Not sure if it also wipes mbr. the docs on the website have been taken down. Another google on my list

A little background about me. I walked away from windows a few years ago. Vector Linux has been my OS on several boxes. I love it. Except the need to play a few games (fs9, fps and silent hunter) sucked me back into XP. This is my first intel MB. My last build and OC was a abit MB and a 1.4 ghz AMD T-bird. that sucker was loud.

The p35 will dual boot linux. I want to run it at stock for awhile, then head towards the moon. I did find a 446 page thread on the p35 on this website. it may take me a bit of time to read through it.

I asume XP will have the sata drivers. Hitting f6 will not be needed. load the mb drivers after xp. I need to turn off ACHI and run nave mode. however, there is a chioce of two audio drivers. Is realteck audio better than High def audio?

Need I worry about the cpu fans start, stop then run?
Is there a big thing to know about intel mb?
Should I run the voltage at 2.1 for this memory?

Pray for me. Windows has my number once again. Linux you turn on only what you need. Windows you shut stuff off for days and days. Not to mention the cost of security. But the craving to game again has a price, huh.

yes dban will nuke the MBR.

XP never really supported sata. You will have to run the drives in ahci mode to get it to work

you want high def audio

Depends on the temps. If they remain low while the fans are off and the fans spin up when temps go up, then you dont need to worry about it. If the fans dont spin up when temps go up, then you may have a problem.

Not really. The G/P3x series chipset intel put out is inferior to the G/P4x series chipset when it comes to overclocking. Also, the latter is a die shrink and improvement on the former.

Run the voltage as low as you can while maintaining stability.

Neither XP or any of the updates (SP1, 2, or 3) included SATA drivers and you can't have AHCI without SATA.

Some of the P35 early boards must have the OS installed in IDE mode from an IDE optical drive because the chipset didn't natively support SATA drives.

My Abit IP35 Pro was like that.

You'll need to f6 or slipstream the SATA drivers to the install disk or better yet, move to w7. smile.gif

Many Gigabyte P35 MBs at that time had a "double boot" issue and that's the "start-stop" issue you're seeing.

Sometimes a BIOS update helped, sometimes not. smile.gif

thanks for the quick replies
thanks for the word on dban/mbr. It is never just a quick goggle, or just one.
DL the manual last night. So many new features to play with! reading it thrice

I do want high def audio. It appears from forums the on-board sound is gamable.

Glad to hear the "double boot" issue is not faulty wiring or the chip spackled with arctic silver paste.

I feel like a traitor changing from AMD to Intel. My budget for computers allows the purchase of memory sticks and hdd. All other hardware must be bartered, begged or stolen at gun point. Same with software. I would like to try win7. After buying ME and Vista, though, I'll stick to XP until a legal copy of win7 drifts by. Anybody want to trade for a handmade leather or denim blank journal lets deal.

Run the voltage at 1.8 for this memory, then step it up until the BSOD goes away, right?

If hot swapping is not a needed feature, do I need to run ACHI? I have Linux networked into five boxes doing all my grunt work. This p35 box is just for gaming on the XP hdd and GIMP on the Linux hdd.

I found a program called nLite to slipstream with. Cool, more reading to do. A quick glance at the features leads me to believe I can make custom XP disk. It looks like it can be used for other machines, not just the one it was made on. I can get behind an unattended XP install.

Sometimes a BIOS update helped, sometimes not.
or
"let a sleeping BIOS lie"

As much as jumping into installing today appeals to me, there are many new bios features here. Does smart fan work or disable it? Is there a template here for how the bios should be set for this MB and CPU? Ah, then what are the memory timings? What a fun to have while mending my socks and watching Tosh.0!

stay turned
