Caviar Black 1tb SATA6G HD...Is It Worth the Purchase? - Page 2

I have a samsung spinpoint and they are pretty damn fast, I think 150mb/s peak. So getting a wd black is kinda moot when you got such speed from a samsung.

I think Hitachi recently broke the record:

CrystalMark (7200rpm):

AS SSD (7200rpm):

CrystalMark (5940rpm):

This isn't what he asked and hitachi drives are not the most popular for quality

For cheaper you can get a F4 spinpoint 2tb. Much better drive, it spins at 5400RPM but its speeds are comparable to the black and the F3 1tb.

Since it's for a desktop, I wouldn't get the Hitachi. If it were for a laptop, then that's another story. Hitachi has the worst reliability record in desktops out of all the major manufacturers, but the best in laptops. WD is a bit more reliable than Samsung as long as failures are concerned, but WD is much worse on terms of DOA. Samsung protects their HDDs well; WD and Seagate don't.

So, OP: stick to your current drive. If you want another one, get a Spinpoint F3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152185

The Spinpoint F3 is a bit faster. I'd rather go for the F4 2TB if I were to choose, though, now that I see the benchmarks for both.

F3 has better transfer rates and more importantly better access times (access is what makes SD's feel so fast)

I'd take the F3 if performance was a priority

I've always been a WDC fan because I've never had a WDC drive fail on me. I still even have some that have files on them from 10 years ago and they run like new.

Saying that however, they are more expensive than other brands like Samsung. & the Sammys have gotten fantastic reviews as far as quietness & speed go. I'm not sure how they will fare in the reliability department as they are still pretty new to the game and there's no way to know until time passes.

& yea, you're not going to see any diff between 3 & 6 on a mechanical drive. At least not at this point in time.

Did they re-enable TLER again? I know there was a big controversy over them disabling it in their newer drivers & firmware on the last generation SATA 3 32MB WD1001FALS.

I was going to get a second 2TB and RAID until i read about that.

all that said 1tb wd black is pretty fast.

But I don't think fast enough to justify buying it over another cheaper drive.
