Half Life 2 , seriously? - Page 2

This is the reason why HL2 is so great. The long campaign with all the puzzles you have to solve really make the game stand out.

I wish it was longer...
Only FPS game I ever done more than one run through, probably beat HL 1 a dozen times since release.

I remember being amazed by its length when I first played it. Finally getting to Black Mesa and feeling like the game must be close to over, then there was ravenholm, and the sand trap, and it just kept going and kept being fun and interesting the whole way.
Then when youre finally done, you have 2 more episodes to play! hahaha

I can never decide what my favorite book, or movie, or song, or anything is. But I can say pretty confidently that the halflife series in general make up many of the best games Ive ever played.

I do not recommend the Cinematic Mod for first time play throughs. Yes, it improves graphics, but it also messes with the music and character models, and in my opinion sometimes ruins the feel, though at other times improves it. The vanilla version is a more coherent experience, though a second play-through with the Cinematic Mod is worth it.

Once you beat HL1, HL2, HL2:E1, HL2:E2, and HL2: Lost Coast, I recommend trying the mod min-campaign (though it's still ~3-4hrs) Minerva: Metastasis. Disconnected from the main story and not made by Valve, but just as compelling and polished as the official games.

Agreed on CM, not for first playthroughs.

Minerva actually did get some help from Valve on the third part of it. The guy who made it works at Valve now.

OP, IIRC my first playthrough of HL2 was 14 hours, on my xbox 360. With episodes and Lost Coast, it's well over 20 hours. HL2 is actually what convinced me to get into PC gaming, it's that good.

What an epic game Half Life 2 is, it really stands out. Savour your time playing it because there are so few games with that level of polish and attention to detail, and most of all length. It took them many years to put it together between HL1 and the release of HL2, causing them to try and speed things up with the episodes - which they have failed to provide speedily of course. That's fine though, games this good are worth waiting for.

I too have played HL2 through many times, there's always some detail or touch to notice that went unnoticed the first time.

For those who haven't seen it I really recommend watching these commentary videos through, you may see the game in a whole new light. If you haven't finished it yet then don't watch of course, it will spoil things for you!

Half-Life 2 was pretty long, I can't remember, but I think I put in over 10 hours on it. EP1 and EP2 are pretty short though. I wouldn't mod the game, it was perfect as is. The only games I have ever put in repeated 5+ hour sessions with. Hell, my little 5 year old niece stayed at my side and watched me beat the entire HL2+EP1+EP2, and she thought is was the coolest game ever. She loved the ant pheremone or whatever. "Throw a stink-bomb!" Not many kids can find something entertaining enough to keep them planted in their seats for hours at a time. In fact, I'd stop playing and she'd get upset and want me to keep going. And this might sound strange, but I didn't even like HL2 when it first came out, it took a few years, and a few tries, to finally get into it. But once I did, it to this day stands as one of the best PC gaming experience I have ever had.
