Help to get Phenom 9950 BE over 3 GHz - Page 2

I should probably thank you all for you replies. Thank you for taking the time to help me out!

Alright, I'll drop the multiplier to x13 and start upping the FSB with the settings that Dopamin3 has suggested.
General question (remember is my first time): how much do you raise the FSB at each interval? +5? +10?

I'm currently at 215, stock voltage and the machine won't POST. Should I increase the VCore?

Yes you should increase it. As I stated before, your CPU is 65nm and very tolerant to high voltages. Just crank it to 1.55v - 1.6v, mess with FSB and multiplier and see if you can make 3ghz. I would also increase the CPU-NB voltage to around 1.4v.

Just did what you suggested. Raised VCore to 1.55v, CPU-NB voltage to 1.4v and FSB to 215 MHz (tried with multiplier x13 and 'Auto'). The machine still won't POST.

EDIT: If I go over 210 MHz, the machine won't POST.

How about 207 X 14.5? That should get you right around 3ghz.

Nope. Windows crashed after 3 minutes of Prime95 testing. Temp was below 60 ºC.
I'm starting to think I won't be able to get to 3 GHz...

Does it fail blend test or small FFT? Blend test could be failing from anything- NB frequency, RAM voltage, RAM timings, unstable CPU, etc... If you run small FFT you can mostly narrow it down to the CPU.

Sorry, I should have mentioned the type of testing. It was large FTTs in order to check max temp.

Just ran small FTTs and Windows froze after 2 min. Oddly enough, after hitting the reset button, the machine won't POST.

UPDATE: same result when testing small FTTs on 205 x 14.5. Will try with lower FSB.

The original Phenom chips were lucky to get 200Mhz out of them on air, ACC helped a bit with the poorer cores, but you should feel blessed that you got 300mhz out of it.

In any case, be sure to keep your HT Link around 1800 or lower, 2.2 will cause you some instability. Try to keep your NB speeds around 1800 as well while you play with your core clock.

Yeah, I guess you are right. Been working on this for over a week. I should probably give up.

In any case, I tried your specs:
- FSB: 207 Mhz
- CPU Multiplier: x14.5
- NB multiplier: auto (sets to x10)
- HT Link: 1.8 GHz
- VCore: 1.55v
- CPU-NB voltage: 1.4v

In any case, small FTTs tests still fail.

Sigh... It's 6:21 AM down here. I think I'll go to bed and keep my good old stable settings: 200 x 14.5, everything else on auto.
Thank you guys. If any new suggestions, I'll try them out tomorrow.

Try using a different mainboard, with my Biostar TA790GX I could hit 3.0GHz with my 9850 no problem on air. As stated before your chipset is a big limiting factor, It might be hard to find but it's worth checking out.
