I7960 Overclock

Thread Starter
I overclocked my i7 960 from 3.2ghz to 3.75 and when I stress test it with prime 95 my temps are hitting 75 celcius. Is that acceptable or what should I try to keep it at to be safe? My qpi is 1.4 and cpu volts is 1.35 and bclk is 150mhz. Does that sound right, anyone have suggestions or advice, thanks!

I changed my bclk to 160mhz cpu volts at 1.35 , dram 1.5, qPI at 1.4 and was able to get 4GHZ and kept a temp of 68 celcius. How how I check at what speed my RAM is running at now? Thanks I would like to leave my ram out of the equation as much as possible while just botting my CPU. Any tips? Thanks

Download cpu-z to check out your ram specs, voltage, and whatnot. My i5 750 hits 63c with prime on my h50, so I say yours is pretty cold for a i7, stock fans get up to 82c with prime @ stock (i7 950)

Ok. I checked my memory is cpu-z and it says that the DRAM frequency is 480mhz and that the NB frequency is 2560 mhz FSBRAM is 2:6.

My memory is corsair dominator rated at 1600mhz

So which one of those shows what it is running at now and what do I need to adjust to change it back to 1600 1700 'ish thanks

You don't want to change ram settings unless you are finished overclocking the cpu.

Even then there is no real benefit to running it at 1600. If your memory multiplier is 8 then you need a bclk of 200 for your ram to run at 1600. With my 950 my ram is at 1540. Whatever fits that it can run at. i7s are not that sensitive to ram settings. Your cpu overclock is the main performance indicator. Your actual ram speed would be double your 480. Yours is low right now but it works. I'm not sure how you change yours, but 2:8 and might want uncore change as well. Not yet.

You haven't filled in your system specs in UserCP/Edit System. They are a help to anyone trying to help you. At least then we know what bios we're dealing with. Please fill them in. Then we can say more clearly what to change.

Are you finished overclocking the CPU?

When I bump up the blck doesnt that affect my memory as well? I do not want to push my ram too far. How can I tell what my RAM is running at? I looked on CPU-Z and it says DRAM frequency is 480mhz and that the NB frequency is 2560

I think your qpi too high. Try lowering it down. Mine is running at 1.27 and I heard 1.35 should be the safe max.

See UserCP at top of forum page. Click there. On the page that opens, lower left "Edit System" Go in there and enter your system details. Then they'll show on every post.

Right now you could push your bclk to the moon and it wouldn't bother the ram. Its rated for 1600 and its only doing 960. That leaves a lot of headroom.

1.4v QPI, well there's 12GB of ram. Large amounts of ram and tight timings want more qpi than small amounts of ram with loose timings. No mention of 124 blue-screens or any other number blue-screens. Maybe OK. Would need to know if getting blue-screen crashes and which ones.

What "Asus Premium" mobo? A P6X58D?

There is an overclocking guide at Clunk.org.uk that uses an Asus mobo as the example:
