No two components are exactly the same. Even if they have the same model number and are made up of the same parts. They are not really the same. The difference comes in unavoidable impefections in the materials and parts and manufacturing. Intel or any other company does what they can to control the imperfections, but it is impossible to completely remove all imperfections. That is why there is still an accepted range or tolerance to determine a "good" part. Even though two 950s are designed the same, and manufactured to be the same, they aren't going to be identical carbon copies of each other. One will overclock higher then the other because of differences in the quality of all the components.

micromanaging, categorizing, differentiating prime materials for their varying impurity levels is too much work/costs too much

its easier to throw it all in the same production process, and then easily test & bin the chips that come out

I dont know the exact reason but I suspect that they test each chip and assign each one to be which ever processor it can run the most stable as with low temps and decent voltage, for the most part.

They are built the same, it's just that as Intel gets better at building chips they go for low leakage over best performance potential (low leakage chips run cooler but clock worse).

Also, it's likely that Intel is cautious with binning when chips first show up, so early chips of a given stepping tend to be good. Later on, when Intel is convinced more dies will do the speeds they want them to without risking failure, more inferior dies make it into the final product, even if that product has a bigger number on it.

Also, despite general trends, there are certainly 920s and 930s that will clock worse (IMC and all) than many 950s, and vice versa.

Fewer defects in the silicon (not silicone) means fewer defects in the chips built on them.

As markag has said, there is significant natural variation from chip to chip, just as there is with any manufactured item.

Go by a dozen of anything. Look at them under a microscope. You aren't going to have any two that are identical.

Only because AMD's current lineup has to fit into such a tight price segment.

If you remember the Athlon, Athlon XP, and Athlon 64/X2 days, they had just as large a price differential between similar chips as Intel does now, if not more so.

My 200 dollar Opteron 165s and 170s OCed to the same ~3.2GHz as the 800+ dollar Opteron 185s or X2 4800+. They were all the same Toledo cores.
