8 Cores?

Thread Starter
Being mainly an AMD kinda person (ignoring current hardware(don't ask))

I'm following (where possible) the release of AM3+ and BD more than Intel's version of 8 cores, however, I believe it's sandy bridge? or will be

however, can anyone give me a brief update on what Intel are doing, going to do, or might be doing in the Octa-Core department, and estimate release dates?

Sandy Bridge-E is coming sometime this year, going to start with extreme editions chips and should have 8,6 and 4 core variants IIRC.

E: and it should be LGA 2011

8 cores on Intel will be released with the LGA1356/2011 Sandy Bridge platform; at first they will all be extreme edition, so expect to pay a lot. Then of course, there's next year's Ivy Bridge platform.

Once Intel goes Ivy Bridge 22nm and a larger 2011-pin die, 8-core CPUs will be the natural step.

But, of course, without Bulldozer, those 8-core chips will cost as much as the 980x.

Ivy is a 22nm die shrink of their current architecture. We don't know what kind of core counts and improvements will be available. But Sandy Bridge-E is the next enthusiast platform.

They might do 16-core for servers, on 22nm, but even if they do, they'll be clocked at 2.0Ghz with no chance at overclocking.

You're better off with a 4.5Ghz 8-core.

What is X-Bridge?

the obvious improvements would be less power consumption, less heat, this is the wrong forum thread for this but an expected cost for both the CPU/Mobo for intel/amd's 8 core platforms?

What is X-Bridge?

X stands for the unknown as used in maths, i.e. sandy bridge, ivy bridge etc?
