It depends on AMD.

If there's little competition, you'll see the poor, 4.0Ghz-capable processors running around 300$ and motherboards at 200$.

If there's no competition, prepare for 1,000$ a chip.

If there's great competition again, heck, they'll be putting out their best chips for 200$.

the cost is not yet known. Basically it depends on what kind of competition AMD and Intel can give to eachother.

But if SB-E is going to be on LGA 2011 expect the motherboards to cost a lot, since they have lot's of features and stuff like 4 channel memory

Oh! I didn't get what you meant there

Sure. Come 2013, Haswell will come around with its new architecture.

But we won't see more cores over Ivy Bridge until Rockwell, probably in 2014.

I don't agree that price goes up with larger sockets/more channels of RAM.

When X58 came out, there were decent 200-300$ boards all around.

This is how technology is SUPPOSED to work - In 2010 3-channel RAM costs 200$. In 2011, 4-channel RAM costs 200$.

Why do you think Intel is building a $5B Fab in Arizona?

intels uk hq is in my hometown and well news is november this year is gonna be massive...

amd will have a good few months headstart with there BD chips 8 core will become the norm by then end of 2012 expect intel to have 8core 16 threaded cpus out this time next year..

fabs have nothing to do with why I speculated they'll be more expensive. more RAM channels and features should mean more trances on the mobo = more expensive. Right?

No.

They build Fabs every three years because..

Technology is going to double in performance every year and you can't sell it for twice the price every year.

So, Intel has to keep making new chips that are twice as powerful and sell them for the same price they sold the now half-powerful chips last year.

So like I said, 2010 - 3 channels for 200$. 2011 - 4 channels for 200$.

And if AMD gets Bulldozer going, we're sure to get it for 100$

But something tells me they won't..

Fabs are where the chips are made, procs, chipsets etc. And a chipset is only a small part of the cost of the motherboard. So in effect new fabs do not significantly affect mobo prices. Stuff like on board audio, better phasing, more expansion slots do.

That's obvious.

I was merely trying to create a pseudo-metaphor to explain how the tech companies are the ones that need to keep themselves one move ahead and we, the consumers get to enjoy better technology every year for the same price.

The reason people complain, is because of this. They buy 3-channel boards for 200$. In a year, you can get 4-channel for the same price and they're pissed.

But that's called progression
