A lot of people assume that HK = Mainland China because we are now back under their rule.

1.31 Mb/s Up

This is costs about 26US a month and is nowhere what the NYT is talking about.

Back when Margaret Thatcher was PM and BT was a public monopoly they wanted to roll out Fibre to the Home for every UK address, including the far flung Islands. Because she wanted to sell the utility off and hated BT with a vengeance, they were refused permission. Just think, we could have had a 21st Century network before some of the posters here were even born. Thanks Maggie......

Maybe if ISP's actually put some of their profits into improving infrastructure rather than letting it sit in account we might get somewhere.

Why would they? They are a business, they intend to make maximum profits for shareholders. They are not there for any other reason other than to make money. This is why I am happy that 3 packages of £50million are being released by the British Government to upgrade un-profitable areas to higher speed internet and to be used to lay more fibre optics.

Ah, just looked it up. No single company owns the trans-atlantic cables. They are owned by numerous companies such as BT, France Telecom, Cable & Wireless, Global Crossing, Level 3 Communications, Reliance Communications, VSNL & CVC. Guess that means no country/ISP can hold the internet ransom.

Max? I haven't heard of a max in the US or Israel since 56k.
