As far as the 1gb radeon is concerned, it's fairly simple: the 5870 is very cost efficient and plays most games very well at HD resolutions. It doesn't require a lot of power and doesn't really overheat.
The GTX480 is just a beefier card, and for the most part you get what you pay for. since these cards are already 1 generation old, $100 difference more than makes up for any disparity in power in the 5870's favor, but for some people that isn't enough money to change their mind if they are fanboys of Nvidia or need an SLi card for their current setup (like me), or want to go 3D or multiple monitor.
Do a little research, don't take any single person's word for it. Check out the graphics card charts @ TOM'S HARDWARE
