SOLVED: Three monitors with SLI

post #1 of 29
Thread Starter

So I got it all working. I have my main monitor plugged into the top card, and then my two secondary monitors plugged into the bottom bard. I have SLI disabled most of the time so that I can use all three. Then when I want to game, I simply enable SLI (No need to reboot or anything) and my main display is the only one active. Simples. Thanks everyone for the help!

Here's the setup at the moment;

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've just saved a monitor from being thrown out at work and thought I could put it to good use. I currently have two 8800GTS' in SLI and two monitors (so both my current monitors are plugged into the top card).

I'm looking at adding the third monitor but obviously can't do so with SLI enabled, so I'm looking at picking up a cheap PCI nVidia card;

Perhaps something like this?

Would I be able to use that card with my current drivers and such? Any foreseeable issues or problems?

Thanks!

Why can't you plug 3 monitors into SLI?
post #3 of 29
Well its old, but yes, you should be able to use that to power the third monitor.

Also just note, that your threat title is a bit miss-leading
Three monitors with SLI usually means surround.

What you wish to do is just add a third pci card to power the third monitor, with is fine.

You can only use 2 monitors on the top card in SLI (any SLI), unless you run surround, which requires exact three monitors.

I thought you could run 3 monitors w/o using Surround?

I've just seen this on nVidia's website;

Can I add a 3rd graphics card in my 2-way SLI enabled PC to connect more monitors?
Yes, you can add an additional graphics card to your PC to connect two additional monitors. The additional graphics card must have a GPU that is different from your SLI GPUs and must be NVIDIA PhysX capable (GeForce 8 series and higher with at least 256MB of memory). For example, two GeForce GTX 2XX GPUs in SLI and a GeForce 9XXX GT is a supported configuration.
That suggests that in order to use three monitors and SLI you'd have to have three PCI-e slots...

I don't see why the cheap PCI card shouldn't work, right? Thanks for the replies!

Apparently my MOBO has three PCI-e slots, so I could get another card for the third maybe?

Yeh as long as your not effecting the air flow to the bottom card. that will be the best option
