Good job! I simply can't understand why AMD insists on those shroud coolers; it only succeeds in reducing the lifespan of their cards (and thus diminishing the credibility of the brand) and annoying customers with noisy cards.

The argument that the card gets hot air into the case is not valid nowadays. We not only have fans expelling hot air outside the case (at least one); we now have cases with vented side panels; since 2004 (Pentium 4 Prescott), it's become a standard. And not only the direct air intake for the CPU, but also a vent for the GPU further below, for the last 3-4 years.

Meanwhile AMD has released 140w CPU's, and the air gets expelled inside the case. I haven't seen that being a major problem.

The fact is that the graphics card with a cooler like yours gets much better temperatures, which are dissipated much faster and expelled by the case fans much faster too. Letting a card hit those temperature with a shroud cooler is not only bad for the card but also for other nearby components because some of that heat ends up being conducted by the proximity and all the electrical and other physical connections the card has with the motherboard. I really think it's counter-productive in the end.

If they are afraid of noobs (the enthusiast buys cards with non-reference coolers and the vast majority expels the air inside the case), they just had to add a 1 page instruction to the card's manual saying to be sure to have a well ventilated case and a minimum of one rear exhaust fan. Problem solved.

Got bored today and push the overclocks to 1050/1445 at 1.3volts, was completely stable with Furmark for 30mins. Didn't want to run it for longer due to not having heatsinks on the mosfets of the video card_

IDLE: 35-37C
Max Load temps(Furmark): 64C

As you can see, this is a mod worth doing and its super cheap too(Considering my local computer shop sells the OEM AMD heatsinks at their store for 15bucks a piece(exactly the same one))

I really want to give this a try but I'm not sure if I would see any big improvements over my 5850's cooler

Thoughts?
