Right upgrade time! What's the best way to go?

So my 4870X2 is practically dead. I'm selling off one of my monster guitar amps for which I should get a little over 1k, so I'll soon be in the position to rake out for a nice high end card.

I've been out of the loop for a while (happens often as there are usually few games that interest me), but seeing as this year is shaping up to be one of the best for new pc titles (most importantly, ones I'm interested in) I want a card that is certain to plow through every taxing game on it's way this year. Basically I want to max out everything to come with ease on not have to worry about upgrading again till next year.

So what's my best bet here? Do you think either the upcoming GTX590 or ATI 6990 are likely to provide that for me? And is there any word on anything better releasing later in the year?

Yes? as most games load from the HDD.

and Windows performance will smash through the roof.

Either a 580 or you play the waiting game. Nvidia and AMD seem to be playing chicken with their dual gpu cards, each waiting until the other releases theirs.

Rumor has it the 6990 will be released on the 8th so you may not have to wait too long. If you are on a single monitor a 580 should "plow through" all the titles.
