Would like to overclock. - Page 2

Hyper 212+ will suit you fine. My friend's x4 640 remained within limits even at 1.55V and stress testing at 3.6Ghz (despite that 3.6 was unstable for him in all cases), and with the single stock fan as well. Push pull may improve the temps some.

Umm I dont know where you get your info from but far as my checkings on my system (sig rig) i see it using 3 cores sometimes 4 along with at the max of 2.4gb of Memory. I play SC2 all the time and i never had it drop on FPS only when there is massive Zerg units and creep which goes down to 25-30fps from 60s to 76

But as said, Phenom II would be best suiting for ya when it comes to Overclocking over Athlon and course Memory has alot to do with it as xd_1771 says..

Agreed: I missed the news post proclaiming SC2 as a horribly coded game.

Certainly SC2s performance weighs more on the CPU than the GPU; RTSs usually do.

OP: Wish I could help; I'm an AMD Nub.

Hmm, if you can, I would return your processor for something slightly better, your processor has no l3 cache, and is bottlenecking your gpu a little.

Running a 5770 with my 1055T I'm able to run maxed and get 80fps, never dipping below 50, it should be no issue for you.

I'd say get a budget phenom II if you can.

Shouldn't my rig run as good or better fps than yours? maybe its my drivers or something?
EDIT: I was looking at the wrong person's sig

Also i made a mistake, i have different ram. I don't know if its better or worse ram but here it is: A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333G (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1333GB2G8-2G

For a better cpu would the AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDX840WFGMBOX be good enough or i'd have to go for a 955 minimum?

CPU scaling performance article for Starcraft 2. It does utilize L3 cache so performance will increase with Phenom IIs vs Athlon IIs and benefits from a cpu-nb overclock.

The Phenom II 840 is a marketing trick, it is not an actual Phenom II. The 840 is a Propus die, not the Deneb, so it is a true Athlon II X4 without any L3 cache.

The Phenom II 820 is a quad core Phenom II deneb chip (C2) with 4MB of L3 cache.

For starcraft 2 all of the intel chips the i3, i5, i7 outperform any of AMD's current chips. I would not upgrade from your Athlon II X4 to any other AM3 chips, the increase in performance from L3 cache and additional overclocking headroom would be difficult to justify the cost, especially when other platforms exist and are soon to come out (1155, AM3+) that will deliver more performance for the cost.

I don't know if i'd want to change to an i3 dual core since i heard that more and more future games will use quad cores and the i5 are 200$ canadian, double the price so i'd probably wait for the price to go down before getting one of those. If i say the 955 isn't worth the cost i guess i'll have to keep playing on lower settings until i buy another processor. Just for information i tested this out on a hdtv 1080i, would this affect fps? i was testing it out on my friends tv because i'm still waiting for my monitor.

Would this fan work for my system?
